Sweet Palermo pepper, also known as sweet horn pepper, is commonly grown in Da Lat.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh Tu - Director of Mai Khoi Farm Company - said that the company is currently cultivating Sweet Palermo peppers on an area of 1.5 hectares. The cultivation period of Sweet Palermo peppers usually lasts more than 8 months; of which, the first 3 months are for planting and 5 months after harvest.

According to Mr. Tu, this type of chili was very difficult to sell before, but recently it suddenly became "hot", people rushed to buy it, causing the situation of "out of stock" to happen continuously. Currently, each month, Mr. Tu's garden harvests between 400 - 600 kg of fruit. This quantity is not enough to supply the market because customers order a lot.

Sweet Palermo peppers are a hot commodity, ordered months in advance by wholesalers.

Similarly, Sweet Palermo peppers are also a "hot" item, ordered by wholesalers several months in advance at the Dalat Garden Cooperative. Ms. Luong Thi Yen Van - Director of the Dalat Garden Cooperative said that Sweet Palermo peppers are of the same breed as bell peppers, so they are easy to care for and grow. The plants are strong and adapt very well.

However, the disadvantage of this variety is that the harvest does not last long, the tree must be supported because the large fruit is very easy to break the branches. The special thing is that their fruit does not have a pungent smell when eaten. The first batch of chili peppers will be larger than the next batches.

If you want to plant a large area for economic purposes, Ms. Van said that you should plant a moderate amount because it is currently a "trend" and it will cool down after a few months. If you want to plant a large area, you should be careful because most chili varieties have low initial investment costs but high care and harvesting costs. In addition, this chili variety cannot be preserved for long, so people who grow it for economic purposes should consider it.

Sweet Palermo peppers can be eaten raw.

According to Ms. Van, this type of chili is currently sold on the market at a rather expensive price. For example, the mini Sweet Palermo chili costs from 90,000 to 120,000 VND/kg, twice as expensive as the price of bell peppers. The large Sweet Palermo chili costs from 120,000 to 180,000 VND/kg depending on the color. In particular, chocolate-colored chili is sold at nearly 200,000 VND/kg in some places but is still difficult to buy due to scarce supply. Not to mention, the price of F1 seeds of this chili is up to 20,000 VND/seed.

“On this occasion, not only regular wholesale customers but also many stores called to place orders. The amount of chili peppers I harvest each day is not enough to supply the wholesalers,” Ms. Van shared.

This type of chili is special in that it has no pungent smell at all, it smells like chili but is not spicy, and is very crunchy.

Ms. Tuyet Suong (Pleiku City, Gia Lai) said that she saw many people looking to buy this type of chili on social networks, so she was curious and wanted to buy it to try and see if it was delicious. However, to order this type of chili, Ms. Suong had to wait nearly a month because everywhere she asked, they said it was out of stock. Ms. Suong ordered 2 kg at 170,000/kg.

"When I received it, I was a bit surprised because I thought the fruit in the photo was an advertisement so it was so big, but in real life it is also very big, some fruits are more than half a kilo. This type is special because it does not have a pungent smell, it smells like chili but is not spicy, very crunchy. I eat it raw, make salad or squeeze it into juice, all are delicious," Ms. Suong shared.
