The Kremlin said on March 14 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had responded to his US counterpart Donald Trump about the proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, as the Russian military said it was tightening its grip on Kursk.

New signal from Russia

The Kremlin confirmed on March 14 that President Putin received US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on the evening of March 13. Mr. Witkoff came to the Russian capital to convey detailed information about the results of the meeting between the US and Ukraine in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) on March 11 to discuss the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

RT quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that President Putin had passed private information to his counterpart Trump through Mr. Witkoff, and the two leaders could talk by phone once the White House owner received the message from Mr. Putin.

"When Mr. Witkoff brings all the information to President Trump, we will decide the time for discussion (between the two US-Russian presidents)," according to Mr. Peskov.

Responding to Fox News, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz revealed on March 14 that the Washington administration is "cautiously optimistic" after the meeting between President Putin and Special Envoy Witkoff.

Regarding Mr Waltz's comments, Mr Peskov said there was reason for cautious optimism and much remained to be done.

Trump wants Putin to spare Ukrainian troops in Kursk

In a post on the social network Truth Soical, President Trump said he urged his Russian counterpart to spare Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region.

Mr Trump praised the meeting in Moscow between the special envoy and President Putin, adding that there was a very good chance of ending the conflict.

According to the White House owner, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are surrounded by Russia in Kursk.

"I strongly urge President Putin to spare their lives," Trump said.

Responding to Mr. Trump, Mr. Putin said that he would guarantee the lives of Ukrainian units in Kursk if they surrendered.

Military analysts say Ukrainian forces in Kursk are virtually cut off after repeatedly losing territory they once controlled there.

However, the Kyiv government army denied information about being surrounded, adding that units here have improved their positions in Kursk.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Mr Trump himself had not yet spoken to Mr Putin about the details of the ceasefire proposal, according to AFP.

After meeting with Mr. Trump at the White House on March 13, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mark Rutte confirmed that the possibility of admitting Ukraine as a member is not being considered at the present stage.

Any security guarantees for Kyiv would be discussed after Ukraine and Russia sign peace talks or a ceasefire is implemented.

Ukraine loses advantage in Kursk

While efforts to persuade Russia to the negotiating table are ongoing, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on March 14 that it had retaken Goncharovka, a village in Kursk previously controlled by Ukrainian forces.

Since advancing across the border last August, Ukrainian forces have claimed control of a significant area in the Kursk region, which they see as one of their few advantages in negotiating with Russia.

However, Ukraine is now losing that advantage to the enemy's advance. In some areas, Russian forces have even advanced across the border into Ukrainian territory in Sumy province.

Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's border service, said Russian forces were trying to enter Sumy and were facing resistance from Ukrainian forces.

Also on March 14, Ukraine and Russia launched drone attacks towards enemy territory.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine launched 28 UAVs overnight compared to more than 300 in the early morning of March 11.

For its part, Kyiv said Russia used 27 UAVs at night, much less than the previous high frequency.

However, both sides also recorded losses and casualties.

Specifically, a UAV attacked a missile depot that loaded Russia's S-300 and S-400 air defense systems. Russian air defense forces also shot down four missiles that were flying toward the capital Moscow.

Meanwhile, officials in Ukraine's Kharkiv province said eight people were injured in a Russian drone attack.
