In an emotional speech on July 21 (US time), Mr. Joe Biden announced that he will not continue to run in the upcoming US presidential election.
US President Joe Biden’s final decision to withdraw was made in the last 48 hours, a senior campaign adviser said, after he consulted with his family and top advisers by phone.
"I have been deeply honored to serve as President. While I would like to continue, I believe that my decision to withdraw is in the best interests of the party and the country. I will focus solely on fulfilling my duties for the remainder of my term," Mr. Biden shared on his social media account X on July 21 (local time).
President Biden, 81, asserted that the United States has made “tremendous progress” in his three-and-a-half years in office. He stressed that the United States now has the strongest economy in the world and has made “historic investments to rebuild our country,” while lowering prescription drug prices for seniors and expanding health care to “record numbers of Americans.”
"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to those who have worked tirelessly to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been an incredible partner in this work. I also extend my heartfelt gratitude to the American people for their faith and trust in me. I believe today what I have always believed, that there is nothing America cannot do, as long as we stand together. We just have to remember that we are America," Biden wrote.
"Today, America is leading like never before. None of this would have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we have overcome a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and preserved democracy. We have energized and strengthened alliances around the world," the US President emphasized.
Biden's decision comes after months of pressure from Democrats who are concerned about his ability to win due to his age and health.
Recent polls have also shown Mr Biden's support waning, raising concerns that he may not be able to effectively compete with Republican candidates, especially former President Donald Trump.
Reaction from the Democratic Party

Following Mr. Biden’s announcement, many Democrats expressed support and sympathy for his decision. Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the potential candidates to replace Mr. Biden, said: “I respect President Biden’s decision and am grateful for his great service to our country. We must continue to unite to ensure a better future for all Americans.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also expressed gratitude for Mr. Biden's efforts throughout his tenure and called for party unity in preparation for the upcoming election.
Biden’s withdrawal poses a major challenge for the Democratic Party, which must now quickly find a new candidate with the strength and vision to face off against the Republican field. Potential candidates include Vice President Kamala Harris, Senator Bernie Sanders and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Some analysts say Biden’s decision could weaken Democratic unity and boost Republicans’ chances in the upcoming election. However, many also see it as an opportunity for the party to find a new, younger candidate who can connect with young voters.
What does the Republican Party think?
Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was quick to respond to Biden's withdrawal. "Joe Biden's decision shows he knows he can't win. We need strong leadership to make America great again," Trump said.
After withdrawing from the race, Mr. Biden plans to focus on completing his current term and continuing to devote himself to the projects and initiatives he has initiated, especially programs related to climate change and public health.
Biden’s withdrawal has completely changed the landscape of the 2024 presidential race. Potential candidates from the Democratic Party will quickly enter the competition to win support from voters and ensure that their party has a chance to win in November.
However, with the current divisions within the Democratic Party and the strong rise of Republican candidates, the upcoming election promises to be one of the most tense and competitive elections in American history.
President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the race is a major shock to American politics, but at the same time it opens up new opportunities and challenges for both the Democratic and Republican Parties. In the coming time, the presidential race will continue to have many complex and unpredictable developments, requiring constant focus and effort from all candidates.
