OneDrive is about to let you work offline

In an update to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the Windows operating system giant announced an additional option for OneDrive, which is offline mode.

This new update is expected to be available for preview in November and begin rolling out to general public in December. Offline mode will allow users to access their cloud-based files via a browser while offline, then sync any changes when they're back online.

Microsoft says in its roadmap that the feature will allow OneDrive to launch in a browser, allowing users to view, organize, rename, move, copy, and delete files even without internet access. Additionally, for locally stored OneDrive files (marked as always available offline), users will be able to open and work on them in a browser even without an internet connection. Any changes made offline will be automatically synced when an internet connection is restored.

Working offline will make Microsoft 365 service users happier

OneDrive’s offline capabilities are currently limited. Without internet access, users can’t sign in to OneDrive or work with files via a browser. They can only access OneDrive files in Windows, but only if they choose to keep them on their device. Easier access and management of files offline would be helpful for people who need to work in locations without internet access.

OneDrive is one of those tools that works in the background, so it doesn't always get a lot of attention. Microsoft hasn't made any major improvements to the platform, just small updates. But the new update could make OneDrive more useful.

Microsoft last week revealed an online event scheduled for October 3. The event, called “Microsoft OneDrive: The Future of File Management is Here,” will highlight new features for the file storage service and showcase how artificial intelligence will drive new search, sharing, and queries for users’ files.
