Early mornings these days, although it is the "golden" time for seafood, many stalls at Dai Tu seafood market (Dai Kim - Hoang Mai - Hanoi) are still unusually empty of customers. Explaining the reason, Mr. Van Nguyen, the owner of a famous store here, said that the price of seafood has increased sharply in the past 2 weeks, causing fewer buyers. " Usually my store is busiest in the early morning or late afternoon, but these past few days the number of customers has been completely absent. Some customers came to ask to buy, but then saw the high price so they stopped ," said Mr. Nguyen.

The sharp increase in seafood prices has made buyers cautious.

According to Mr. Nguyen, the prices of all types of seafood have increased by more than ten times, which has surprised even long-time seafood traders like him. Specifically, the price of snails has increased from 300,000 VND to 420,000 VND/kg. Compared to more than a month ago, the estimated price difference is 150,000 VND/kg.

The price of yellow mantis shrimp also increased from 600,000 VND to 750,000 VND. “ Black mantis shrimp even jumped to nearly 1.7 million VND/kg. The price is so expensive that the store does not dare to buy it for fear that no one will buy it ,” the seafood store owner shared.

Crabs, shrimps, and clams have all increased in price. Pointing to the fresh crabs in the tank, Mr. Nguyen said that the price of crabs has increased from 250,000 VND/kg to 300,000 VND/kg, and even the price of large, beautiful crabs has increased to 450,000 VND/kg. " The store is forced to import small quantities, and only takes more orders when customers call because we are afraid that if we buy too much and don't sell them all, we will suffer heavy losses ," Mr. Nguyen continued to share.

Fresh crab prices skyrocket.

Previously, Ca Mau crab was only about 450,000 VND/kg, but now it has increased to 550,000 - 700,000 VND. Tiger shrimp increased from 170,000 VND to 250,000 VND/kg; Large shrimp increased from 360,000 VND to 450,000 VND/kg. Fresh mantis shrimp also increased from 400,000 to 600,000 VND/kg.

The owner of another famous restaurant on Tran Hung Dao Street also said that the soaring seafood prices have caused the restaurant to lose customers even though it is the peak summer season. “ Regular customers call to make reservations and then quickly cancel after being informed of the price. The sudden increase in seafood prices is causing difficulties for the restaurant ,” he said.

According to the Vietnam Aquaculture Association, the price of both domestic and imported seafood has increased by 20-30%, causing consumers to spend significantly less on this product.

Mr. Tran Van Truong, General Director of Hoang Gia Seafood International Trading Company Limited, informed that some imported items such as king crab have increased in price to a record high due to limited supply and increased transportation costs. Meanwhile, domestic seafood such as shrimp, crab, crab, snails... have all increased by about 20 - 30% compared to the beginning of the year and the same period last year. This increase is actually very high, causing the value of each order of consumers to decrease.
