Currently, Mr. Ngo Pham Quoc Trung, Lien Nghia town, Duc Trong district (Lam Dong province) is raising earthworms and is also raising 50 bantam chickens for eggs. He supplies the tiny bantam chicken eggs to the market at a price of 5,000 VND/egg.
Hundreds of tons of manure from livestock are putting a lot of pressure on the rural environment. And, farmers in Duc Trong (Lam Dong province) are doing a great job of dealing with these environmental problems with a simple animal: earthworms.
Mr. Ngo Pham Quoc Trung, Residential Group 31, Lien Nghia town, Duc Trong district (Lam Dong province) is implementing a closed model of raising earthworms - raising specialty chickens.
Mr. Quoc Trung shared that he had previously raised a few different animals. Realizing the need to enjoy specialty agricultural products, he chose to raise bantam chickens for eggs. His bantam chickens are raised in natural conditions, free-range, and only eat rice, corn, and vegetables.
To provide food for the chickens, Mr. Quoc Trung grows mustard greens, water spinach, etc. so that the chickens can eat vegetables every day. However, to supplement protein and calcium for the chickens, Mr. Quoc Trung chooses a pet: earthworms.
“Chickens raised without insects lack nutrients and the quality of their eggs is not good. Therefore, I choose to raise earthworms on trays so that the chickens can eat worms. The worms are raised on leftover vegetable roots, peels, and spoiled fruit because my family makes smoothies. Raising worms is very easy, the worms process leftover vegetables and fruits and grow quickly. The chickens eat worms and get enough nutrition and lay very good eggs,” Trung shared.
Currently, Mr. Ngo Pham Quoc Trung is raising more than 50 bantam chickens for eggs. He supplies the tiny bantam chicken eggs to the market at a price of 5,000 VND each.
According to Mr. Quoc Trung, raising worms to process spoiled vegetables and fruits, then feeding the worms to bantam chickens has created an effective and clean circular economic model, making it easy for the family to process excess fruit. At the same time, the amount of fermented chicken manure is fertilized in the vegetable garden, helping the vegetable garden to grow well, with enough vegetables for the chickens to eat every day.
Mr. Quoc Trung is expanding the model of raising natural bantam chickens for eggs. According to him, raising earthworms and bantam chickens is an effective model for farmers with gardens.
Mr. Le Van Thanh's earthworm farm, Hiep Thanh commune, Duc Trong district, Lam Dong province.
Not only Mr. Ngo Pham Quoc Trung's family, hundreds of farming households in Duc Trong district are actively expanding the scale of raising earthworms. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan - Chairman of Duc Trong District Farmers' Association said that Duc Trong is one of the key areas for dairy farming in Lam Dong.
It can be said that the environmental pressure on Duc Trong rural areas is quite large, especially in livestock farming. “Over the past years, the entire Duc Trong district as well as our Farmers’ Association have sought every method to enhance environmental treatment, protect the countryside, and build a green agriculture.
According to statistics, by early October 2024, Duc Trong had a herd of over five thousand dairy cows, causing a huge pressure on the environment due to waste from cow farms," admitted Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan. However, an open direction has shown that treating waste from dairy farms with earthworms also brings a source of profit to farmers.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, in Duc Trong district, there are currently hundreds of models of waste treatment from dairy farms by raising earthworms. There are many large-scale farms, capable of processing hundreds of cubic meters of manure per month.
The advantage of raising earthworms to treat cow waste is that earthworms use manure very quickly, turning fresh cow manure into nutritious worm manure that is easily absorbed by plants and is popular in the market.
Large models such as the earthworm farm of Mr. Tran Huu Nguyen, Ninh Gia commune, Mr. Le Van Thanh, Hiep Thanh commune... process fresh cow manure on a large scale, producing dozens of tons of vermicompost with high economic value. In addition to large farms, many households in dairy farming areas have built their own small earthworm farms, processing manure discharged from their family cow farms.
The large scale of Mr. Le Van Thanh's earthworm farm in Hiep Thanh commune has created a large connection. Accordingly, neighboring cow farmers will bring manure to supply Mr. Thanh's earthworm farm.
The amount of vermicompost is processed, packaged and widely supplied in the province as well as vegetable and flower growing localities nationwide. This is a model that has shown success in closely linking livestock farming and environmental treatment.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, currently, the amount of cow manure being processed by farms in the area is about 20% of the total daily manure. And, the Duc Trong District Farmers' Association has actively promoted farmers, transferred techniques, and implemented environmental protection projects from the local to the central level so that farmers can access new and effective environmental treatment techniques.
Local support and farmers’ efforts are helping to reduce environmental pollution. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan affirmed: “Our goal is to move towards green agriculture, organic agriculture.
Therefore, raising useful animals such as earthworms and calcium worms will be one of the Association's priorities to help members and farmers treat the environment according to the circular agricultural model, bringing benefits to farmers while protecting the environment sustainably.
