Yen Thanh is the eel granary of Nghe An. In recent years, with support from the State and investment from the people, the professional agencies of Yen Thanh district have successfully implemented many models of mud-free eel farming in cement tanks. Among them, the closed commercial eel breeding model following VietGAP process of Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh in Yen Phu hamlet, Van Thanh commune, is considered a success.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh said that at the end of 2021, with the support of 122 million VND from the Yen Thanh District Agricultural Service Center, along with his family's investment capital, he built a closed eel farm with a scale of 200m2 . The closed house is arranged in 2 areas: the nursery area and the commercial eel farming area, both of which are equipped with a convenient and scientific water supply system.

To have a source of quality eel eggs for breeding, Mr. Thanh invested in a system of parent eel ponds in a separate area.

After 2 years of implementation, the model has produced 50,000 eel fry. Part of that number of eel fry is supplied to the neighboring area; the remaining 25,000 are raised by him to develop mud-free commercial eel in cement tanks, using microbiological technology and circulating water filtration.

"From this successful model, in the long term we will move towards processing eel products to meet consumer demand in the market," Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh shared.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Huong - Director of Yen Thanh District Agricultural Service Center said: After the model has confirmed its success with the farming process according to VietGAP standards, the unit is guiding the family to complete the application for the competent authority to recognize VietGAP eel products in the near future.

The successful model is the basis for expanding the farming of aquatic species with high economic value, aiming at sustainable development, creating conditions for farmers to apply in actual production locally and in Yen Thanh district.

Eel is rich in nutrients and is processed into many specialty dishes by restaurants in Nghe An, which have long been loved by diners from near and far./.
