Foamy urine: Beware of 5 dangerous diseases

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí18/12/2024

(Dan Tri) - Foamy urine is not always a cause for concern, but it can be a sign of dangerous diseases that the body is trying to warn about.

In daily life, many people often ignore unusual signs from the body.

One of them is foamy urine. This seemingly harmless phenomenon can be an early warning from internal organs, especially the kidneys.

Recent medical studies have shown that persistent foamy urine not only reflects a temporary health condition but can also be related to dangerous diseases such as kidney failure, diabetes or even high blood pressure.

Before you worry, it's important to understand that foamy urine isn't always a sign of illness. There are completely benign causes, such as:

- Strong urine stream: When urinating too quickly, the urine stream collides strongly with the water surface, causing foaming.

- Dehydration: When the body lacks water, urine becomes more concentrated and foams easily when excreted.

- Detergents: Some chemicals or soaps in the toilet can react with urine, causing more foam to appear.

If the foam dissipates quickly within a few minutes or does not recur, you do not need to worry too much. However, if the urine is constantly foamy, accompanied by unusual symptoms such as pain, fatigue or swelling, this could be a warning from the body.

Signs of serious illness

Many scientific studies have shown that prolonged foamy urine is related to a number of dangerous diseases, especially kidney and metabolic diseases.

Nephrotic syndrome

Foamy urine is a classic sign of proteinuria, which is too much protein in the urine. This is a common symptom in people with nephrotic syndrome. The kidneys are damaged and can no longer filter blood effectively.

Research from Johns Hopkins University shows that proteinuria is an early symptom of many kidney diseases, of which nephrotic syndrome accounts for up to 70% of cases. If not treated promptly, this condition can lead to chronic kidney failure.

Diabetes

People with diabetes, especially those who do not control their blood sugar well, are at risk of kidney damage. When blood sugar is high, the kidneys are overworked, leading to protein leakage into the urine, making the urine foamy.

According to research published in the journal Diabetes Care, about 30-40% of type 1 and type 2 diabetics develop diabetic kidney disease, and proteinuria is an early sign of this damage.

High blood pressure

Prolonged high blood pressure not only affects the cardiovascular system but also damages the small blood vessels in the kidneys. When this happens, the kidney's filtering function is impaired, causing proteinuria and foamy urine.

A report from the Journal of Hypertension found that patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure are three times more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than those with normal blood pressure.

Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Foamy urine can occur due to urinary tract infections, especially when bacteria invade and damage the lining of the bladder or urethra. Along with the foam, the patient often feels pain when urinating, and the urine has a foul odor or is cloudy.

Liver dysfunction

The liver plays an important role in producing proteins and balancing fluids in the body. When the liver is damaged due to hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer, the urine may also appear foamy due to changes in protein levels.

Take care of your kidney health with daily habits

- Drink enough water: Water helps the kidneys function effectively, prevents dehydration and reduces the risk of foaming in urine.

- Eat healthy: Limit salt, sugar and animal protein intake, especially in people at high risk of kidney disease or diabetes.

- Regular health check-ups: Especially if you have a family history of kidney disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.
