She was Nguyen Thi Banh, a famous female general in the Lam Son uprising, wife of Nguyen Chich - the leading founding father of the Later Le dynasty.

According to historical records, in the early 15th century, Nguyen Chich raised the flag of uprising against the invading Ming army in Hoang Nghieu (Thanh Hoa). Relying on the rugged terrain with many steep cliffs, Nguyen Chich repeatedly repelled attacks by the Ming army.

To consolidate his strength and expand his uprising base, he increased his recruitment of soldiers. Once, a young man came to see the commander. Nguyen Chich saw that this man had a small, scholarly appearance and looked like he could not even tie a chicken. He asked what his abilities were. The young man replied, "I have studied martial arts since I was young. Now, because I hate the enemy, I have come to ask to join the army."

Nguyen Chich immediately let one of his generals fight the young man to see how capable he was. In a moment, the young man defeated Nguyen Chich's general. After that, other generals were defeated one by one, the whole camp was surprised and admired. Nguyen Chich was delighted and recruited the talented man into his army.

However, through witnessing his daily activities, he noticed that the young man had gestures and habits that were completely different from everyone else. His gentle appearance, face, skin, body shape, walking, and hands were like a girl's.

To answer his question, Nguyen Chich came up with a plan. He organized a wrestling match for the entire army, ordering everyone to participate. Being put in a difficult position, the young man initially tried to politely refuse. Under the orders and pressure of the soldiers, this person was forced to confess to Nguyen Chich that she was a woman disguised as a man, her real name was Nguyen Thi Banh.

Discovering that Nguyen Thi Banh had deceived him, but out of admiration for her talent and will, Nguyen Chich still kept her. Love blossomed, and later he married her and appointed her as his deputy general.

After marrying General Nguyen Chich, Nguyen Thi Banh and her husband commanded soldiers to defeat the enemy. Many times, she personally led troops to fight the enemy. Among Nguyen Thi Banh's famous battles, the most mentioned is the battle to defend Yen Mo citadel.

After repelling the Northern invaders, Le Loi ascended the throne, Nguyen Chich was given the title of Dinh Thuong Hau - one of the founding heroes. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Banh was also given the title of wife, retired to take care of the house and manage everything.

Although later, for many reasons, Nguyen Chich was demoted by Le Loi and became a commoner, Nguyen Thi Banh always stood by her husband through all the difficulties of life.

When Le Loi passed away, Le Thai Tong ascended the throne and invited Nguyen Chich to return to his official position. At that time, the Champa army was again harassing our country. Nguyen Chich and his wife Nguyen Thi Banh continued their journey to keep the country's borders safe.

History books do not clearly record this story, but folklore affirms that the famous female general contributed greatly to repelling the Champa army with her husband.
