The Miracle of Beatrice Chebet
For many years, this East African country has produced champions in long-distance athletics events. At the 2024 Olympics, that tradition will be renewed. In the early morning of August 6, runner Beatrice Chebet excellently brought gold medal for Kenya in the women's 5,000m event. Chebet finished first with a time of 14 minutes 28.56 seconds. Her compatriot Faith Kipyegon was initially disqualified after finishing second with a time of 14 minutes 29.6 seconds, but later successfully appealed to win silver. Beatrice Chebet led with Kipyegon for most of the race, but in the final stage Chebet had a lightning sprint to take the top position.Chebet (left) and Kipyegon brought Kenya two medals - Photo: REUTERS

Born in 2000, Beatrice Chebet grew up in Kericho, in the western highlands of Kenya. Chebet started running long distances in primary school. However, the 2000-born runner's biggest breakthrough came in 2016. A neighbor recognized her talent and convinced Chebet's grandmother (who was living with her) to let her attend an athletics camp. And here, the journey of the Olympic champion was born. Less than a year later, Chebet attended the 2017 U18 World Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. Here she finished fourth in the 3,000m event.Beatrice Chebet graduated from Kenya's National Police Training College - Photo: NATION
