Israeli Cabinet has "major changes", Prime Minister takes drastic action, people take to the streets to protest

On November 5, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a loss of confidence during the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Times of Israel , in a video statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu stated: "In the first months of the conflict, there was trust between me and the Defense Minister and work was carried out effectively, but unfortunately in recent months, this trust has been broken."

Believing that this could not continue, Mr. Netanyahu made it clear: "Therefore, today I decided to end the term of the Minister of Defense."

The Israeli Prime Minister also announced that Gallant will be replaced by Israel Katz, currently Foreign Minister, while Gideon Sa'ar, currently Secretary of State, will replace Katz.

The New York Times said Mr. Gallant, 65, a moderate voice in the government on security issues, is increasingly seen as an internal rival of Prime Minister Netanyahu.

In his first reaction, Mr. Gallant wrote on the social network X: "The security of the state of Israel has been and will always be my life's mission."

According to the former "commander" of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Mr. Gallant was fired because of three main disagreements: the conscription order for extremist Jews, the hostage release agreement and the call for the establishment of a state commission to investigate the security failures surrounding the Hamas attack on the country on October 7, 2023.

“My firm position is that everyone of military age must serve in the army,” Gallant said. “They must serve in the Israel Defense Forces and defend the state of Israel. This is no longer just a social issue. This is a matter of paramount importance to our security and survival.”

News of Mr Gallant’s resignation had been circulating for months. Netanyahu’s decision, a risky move at a time when Israel is fighting two fronts in Gaza and Lebanon, was immediately supported by far-right members of the government but strongly opposed by opposition politicians.

Immediately after the head of the Israeli government announced the decision to dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on the evening of November 5, thousands of Israelis in major cities took to the streets to protest at the call of opposition political parties.

In Tel Aviv, people flooded the main Ayalon Highway, blocking traffic and forcing police to deploy forces to blockade it. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, protesters also poured into Prime Minister Netanyahu's official residence to protest.
