“I never thought that my silent work for the community would be honored by the city. I also never thought that this small action would give me the opportunity to visit Uncle Ho’s Mausoleum and return to his hometown,” Ms. Phan Thi Kich, a resident of Cu Chi District (HCMC), shared emotionally.

An emotional trip
One day at the end of November 2023, Ms. Phan Thi Kich was able to participate in a journey to the source organized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in coordination with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. As a child of the South, Ms. Kich always loved, admired and worshiped Uncle Ho. However, it was not until she turned 57 that she had the opportunity to go to the capital Hanoi, visit Uncle Ho's Mausoleum and go to Nam Dan district (Nghe An province), to see with her own eyes the simple thatched house, the small bed, the yard and the garden where Uncle Ho was born and raised.
Before the rustic but solemn scenery, seeing with their own eyes the preserved artifacts and through the narrator's story, Ms. Kích and many delegates could not help but feel moved and emotional.
“Until now, I have only heard and seen Uncle Ho through pictures and documentaries. Now that I have seen with my own eyes the simple thatched house where Uncle Ho was born and raised, my heart is filled with emotions. From the moment I was informed that I would be participating in the trip back to my roots, I have been anxiously counting down the days,” said Ms. Kích.
After visiting President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum with the delegation, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Dong, 70 years old (from Hanoi, currently living in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), choked up and wiped away tears. She said that this was the second time she had visited Uncle Ho. The first time she visited Uncle Ho was when she went with a group of students to see him off in 1969. "This time, when I visited Uncle Ho, my brothers and sisters in the delegation reported to Uncle Ho about our work in supporting the community and society. Everything we do is to follow Uncle Ho's example," Ms. Anh Dong confided.
Wearing a traditional Vietnamese dress and a Southern scarf around her neck, Ms. Nguyen Bich Thuy (67 years old, living in Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City) reached out to search for the names of martyrs from the southern provinces who died at Dong Loc T-junction (Ha Tinh province). Offering a branch of white chrysanthemums to the graves of female martyrs who died at Dong Loc T-junction, Ms. Bich Thuy choked up: “I am moved and happy because this is the first time I have visited Uncle Ho's Mausoleum and visited the red addresses. The trip is very meaningful to me, helping me understand more about my country as well as the silent but noble examples around me.”
Willing to devote more energy to contribute
During the meaningful journey, Ms. Duong Thi Kim Dung (69 years old, residing in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) respectfully reported to President Ho Chi Minh about her work. Ms. Kim Dung expressed that all her small actions came from learning from Uncle Ho. Over the past 20 years, many homeless people have been taken care of and supported by her; many students have been supported, cared for, and even welcomed to her home to be fed and educated. She also participated in the program "Vietnamese families with Lao and Cambodian students" to support students from other countries to study in Ho Chi Minh City. "In this life, I have vowed to do more useful things to contribute to the community, Ho Chi Minh City and the country. Despite my old age, I am determined to devote myself to the end," Ms. Kim Dung expressed.
Having participated in the trip and met examples of noble deeds for the community, Ms. Do Thi Khanh Tram (member of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Volunteer Group) realized that her contribution was too small. Ms. Tram and the members of the group vowed to devote their youth, dynamism, health and capacity to contribute more and more, spreading love more and more.
As for 71-year-old former Youth Volunteer Tran Thi Kim Hai (living in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), although she has visited Uncle Ho's hometown many times, this trip back to her roots is extremely meaningful to her. Because on this trip, Ms. Kim Hai met typical examples with extremely meaningful work for the community. "The trip encouraged and motivated me as well as other silent examples to do more good things. From there, we can help the difficult lives as well as the lives of local people to become better and better," Ms. Kim Hai expressed.
In November 2023, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to organize 2 trips to the source for advanced models "Silent but noble examples" in the patriotic emulation movement of Ho Chi Minh City, period 2014-2022. From the city named after Uncle Ho, the delegates went to the capital Hanoi and the provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
