Here are some Christmas customs and traditions around the world.

Talking Animals on Christmas Eve in Poland

In Poland, people believe that animals are gifted with the ability to speak on Christmas Eve. Jesus was born in a manger, which was a feeding trough for animals, and when he was born, the animals on the farm bowed their heads in greeting. Therefore, animals are gifted with the ability to speak human language on the night of December 24. Many Polish children will often try to converse with their pet dogs and cats on Christmas Eve.

Celebrate Christmas early in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, people celebrate Christmas early. The night of December 5th is the most anticipated night for children because Saint Sinterklaas will come to deliver presents. They will leave a shoe by the fireplace, sing Dutch Christmas songs and wait for the presents to arrive.

Germany has a similar tradition. On the evening of December 5, the day before St. Nicholas Day, German children clean their shoes and leave them near the fireplace. The next morning, they receive shoes filled with chocolate and sweets, a gift from St. Nicholas as praise for being good all year.

Tangerines and small gifts are also placed in shoes, similar to Christmas presents in stockings in other countries. For naughty children, rotten potatoes are a "reward" instead of candy in shoes.

Roller skating on Christmas Eve in Venezuela

Many people will spend Christmas Eve with friends at the local pub, others will drink chocolate and watch a movie at home. For Venezuelans, it is a fun night of roller skating.

On Christmas Eve, people in the capital Caracas will travel to sacred sites to attend mass on roller skates.

Ice skating is such a popular tradition that many streets ban cars so people can skate safely and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Christmas pig slaughter in Romania

Families in rural areas would gather and sacrifice a pig from their household. The meat would then be used to prepare Christmas food. This event usually took place on December 20 and was called Ziua de Ignat. Today, many people consider this tradition to be cruel to animals, so it is no longer as popular as it once was.

Santa surfing in the US and Australia

Christmas in Australia is summer, the weather is hot. Therefore, people and tourists are familiar with the image of Santa Claus wearing bright red Christmas clothes, wearing boots and surfing on the sea.

The tradition spread to the United States, especially on the morning of December 24, when people from across the country gathered to watch hundreds of surfers dressed as Santa Claus on Cocoa Beach in Florida.
