Every year, My Uyen just hopes that Mid-Autumn Festival does not fall on the weekend, because on the weekend I have to perform, and I hope to be able to spend this time with my family. The two words "reunion" are very simple, sometimes it just means spending some time together, going home to cook, and talking to each other. Uyen also hopes that no matter how busy every family is, they will always spend time together on this day.

If we have to perform on the Mid-Autumn Festival night, then we are sacrificing our reunion for the audience. Meeting the audience and receiving applause from the audience is an extremely precious reunion, a great source of motivation for artists to overcome their own circumstances to complete their tasks.

My Uyen remembers that one year during the Mid-Autumn Festival, an artist fell off his bike before the performance, but couldn’t find a replacement. In the end, he took painkillers to try to get on stage with the audience. My Uyen herself was the same, sometimes she was very tired but still tried to perform. That is a certain respect, the meaning of sacrifice for the profession.

With only a short time left until the Mid-Autumn Festival, Ms. My Uyen and her fellow artists must be busy preparing new plays to serve the audience this time. Going to the theater during the Mid-Autumn Festival is considered a habit of Saigon people, does Ms. My Uyen feel the same way?

During the holidays, especially the Mid-Autumn Festival, all Vietnamese people want to gather together. In Saigon, the phrase "sum vay" has another definition. Going to the theater during the Mid-Autumn Festival has become a hard-to-break habit for many Saigon families. Many older customers believe that the Mid-Autumn Festival is a lucky occasion, and they must go to the theater to watch a play.

The Mid-Autumn Festival schedule at the theater is also more crowded. During these days, while everyone else goes out, I go to work. Although I am busy and do not have time to reunite with my family, for an artist like My Uyen, it is a great happiness.

Going to the theater is a "gathering" activity on Mid-Autumn Festival night for many families in Saigon.

So in the world of artists like Ms. My Uyen, what is different about the definition of reunion?

For artists, gathering together at work, eating and sleeping on stage is happiness, not just gathering together in everyday life. Artists also connect with each other by communicating through social networking sites. People create online chat groups to connect and ask about each other, no matter how busy they are. That is an extremely precious emotional bond.

Looking to the future of the theater, what do you think, My Uyen? Is there anything you want to say to the audience?

I am happy that the theater audience now includes not only the elderly, but also young audiences and their children. Previously, many families only went out to play, eat, and shop on the weekend; now, parents of children spend an hour taking the whole family to watch their favorite play.

Audiences now have more choices, especially young audiences. To retain audiences, we must have good works. We also need to find a way to make audiences come to the theater more, and love drama more, to keep the stage burning and bring a "gathering" space for families.

We have interviewed a number of other actors. They all confided that, whether they are acting in television or movies, they still want to return to the theater. Is it because the theater has great magic, a sanctuary for artists to live fully with their emotions?

We artists come to the stage because of the passion for the profession, because of the love for the profession, because of the more than 2 hours of sublimation to meet the audience directly. When we go to film, we only film with the people in the crew and then go home. On the stage, we always feel very excited. Every moment the audience laughs and cheers is like a connecting thread between the artist and the audience. That is the special point of traditional theater that other things do not have. For My Uyen, the stage has magic, if she cannot perform, she will be extremely restless. The important thing is that there are viewers so that there are people interacting with the performances.

The audience, they come to the stage to watch, but now we are not performing because of pride or sadness, which is not good. Then there are overseas Vietnamese who come to watch plays during Tet, they admire and love me. Looking at the moments when the audience shows their precious affection, I believe more and more that true art theater will never disappear, it is just that we do not know how to keep the audience.
