Black pig farming

In July 2023, with the support of 20 black piglets from the government, 10 households in Village 2 (Tra Vinh Commune) coordinated to establish a group to implement this farming model. Determined to take care of them, the herd of pigs has now increased to nearly 70, growing healthily.

During his shift, Mr. Tran Thanh Ten (head of the black pig group) diligently fed the pigs. Looking at the fat black pigs nodding at the feeding trough, Mr. Ten happily shared: "Thanks to the attention and facilitation from the Party Committee and the People's Committee of Tra Vinh commune, which provided breeds and created a concentrated breeding group, we have this effective model.

At first, the group encountered many difficulties because they did not understand the farming methods and it was inconvenient to travel because the barns were built on the other side of the stream. However, the authorities at all levels opened training classes, instructing on farming and veterinary skills for the pigs. And especially when the Commune People's Committee supported the construction of a bridge across the stream, our people could travel easily, take care of the pigs more conveniently and safely during the rainy season."

According to Mr. Ten, the model is currently raised on an area of 2 hectares, located in an uninhabited area, ensuring clean farming without affecting the environment. Up to now, this batch of black pigs has sold nearly 20 for meat at 120,000 VND/kg and more than 40 for breeding at 1.5 million VND/10kg. In 2024, the group sold 2 times, earning over 50 million VND.

Seeing the effectiveness of the pilot model, Mr. Nguyen Van Van (village 2, Tra Vinh commune) also started raising black pigs at the end of 2024. After more than 4 months of learning and raising, Mr. Van's herd of 15 pigs has also grown strongly, and many people have come to ask to buy.

“I have been farming for a long time but my life has not improved, so I have learned and raised black pigs. Now the pigs are healthy, the market is also open, many businesses in Nam Tra My district have asked to buy, I feel secure in raising them. If I can sell them at a good price and there are no diseases, I plan to expand the area, build a larger barn, separate piglets to replicate this model,” said Mr. Van.

Not only Mr. Van, many households in Tra Vinh commune saw the effectiveness of the black pig model of the group of 10 households in village 2, came to learn from the experience and started raising them. The pigs reproduced and developed well, the black pig model in Tra Vinh commune was awarded the "Skillful People's Mobilization" award by the Nam Tra My District Party Committee in 2024.

Grass-fed goat farming

Focusing on raising grass-fed goats since 2024, the herd of 50 goats of a group of 10 households in village 1, Tra Vinh commune is now approaching the breeding season. Excited about taking care of the goats through the cold season, Mr. Tran Quoc Hai (group leader) shared: “The main food source for goats here is grass, bananas, and forest leaves. Market prices are also quite stable, selling from 150,000 - 170,000 VND/kg live weight. Participating households will support each other in raising methods, as well as taking better care of sick goats. The local government cares a lot about us, regularly checking, providing instructions on medicine, veterinary medicine, and care methods…”

In addition to raising goats in groups, Mr. Hai also has a herd of 15 goats at home. Mr. Hai said that thanks to the local food source, which is easy to find, it does not cost much. However, the biggest difficulty is the climate, the goats eat cold grass, grow slowly, and are susceptible to disease.

The group has 10 members, the team leader assigns tasks to each household to take care of the goats every day and monitor the illness of each goat. When the weather changes, people will light a fire, cover the barn, and turn on electric lights to keep the goats warm. When the goats have common diseases such as sore eyes, pneumonia, stuffy nose, etc., the team leaders and deputy team leaders who have been trained in veterinary medicine will treat the animals.

Also one of the pioneer households raising grass goats in this mountainous area, Mr. Ho Van Guong (village 2, Tra Vinh commune) has significantly improved his life with a revenue of nearly 100 million VND/year from grass goats. Starting with a few breeding goats, Mr. Guong's herd has now reproduced and is healthy with nearly 50 goats.

Not only focusing on developing the family economy, he also “held hands and guided”, supporting grass goats at preferential prices for villagers. Grass goat raising households were awarded by the District Party Committee for “Skillful Mass Mobilization”, improving their family income such as Mr. Ho Van Duong, Ho Van Quy… when they started raising animals thanks to Mr. Guong’s support.

Chicken

Piloting the model of raising chickens in the highlands, now the flock of chickens of Mrs. Tran Thi Que (village 1, Tra Vinh commune) has shown initial results. Starting to raise chickens in September 2024 with 500 chickens, through learning from experience and getting breeds from Tak Po people (Tra Tap commune), Mrs. Que has now earned nearly 100 million VND.

Preparing to import the next batch of breeds, Mr. Bo Loong A Nhiep (Mrs. Tran Thi Que's husband) said: "This breed of chicken is very easy to raise, has high resistance, and can withstand cold weather well. The chickens are raised using the free-range method, the chicken meat is firm and delicious, so it is also very easy to sell."

Mr. Nhiep said that the most difficult thing was when he first brought this breed of chicken home, he and his wife had to be on duty regularly to prevent the chickens from crushing each other and find ways to cover the coop to keep the chickens from getting cold. After a period of raising, the chickens were healthy, and more than 400 were sold for 120,000 VND/kg. The main consumer markets were districts in Quang Nam province and Da Nang city.

“In the past, I also tried to do business, raise pigs, raise goats, cows, plant acacia, cinnamon... but life was still unstable. Now, I raise more chickens, my income is stable, my family is better off. At the same time, my family also receives attention from the local government, supporting vaccines for chickens when the epidemic season comes,” said Mr. Nhiep.

In 2024, Tra Vinh commune had 8 models (including 5 models of raising black pigs, grass goats and chickens) recognized and rewarded by Nam Tra My District Party Committee as "Skilled Mass Mobilization" models. Up to now, these livestock models are still very effective, developing strongly, and reproducing well. These models have spread, received response from many people, learned about livestock farming and are being replicated. Thanks to effective economic models, people's lives are more stable. In 2024, 42 households registered to escape poverty.
