The Trump administration is considering imposing full or partial travel restrictions on citizens of dozens of countries as part of a new ban on entry to the United States, according to sources familiar with the matter and a memo seen by Reuters.

The memo lists 41 countries divided into three separate groups. The first group of 10, including Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Cuba and North Korea, will face a complete visa suspension.

For the second group, five countries will face a partial suspension, affecting tourist, student and other types of immigration visas, with some exceptions. In this case, wealthy business travelers may be allowed in, but those traveling on immigration or tourist visas will not.

In the third group, a total of 26 countries, including Belarus, Pakistan and Turkmenistan, could have their US visa issuances partially suspended if their governments "fail to make efforts to correct deficiencies within 60 days."

The list is subject to change and has not yet been approved by the government, an unnamed US official noted.

The New York Times also reported on the list of countries under consideration for visa restrictions, but said the list had not yet been approved by the government.

Spokespeople at several agencies declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment. The State Department also did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters .

But the State Department has previously said it is following President Trump's order and is "committed to protecting the nation and its citizens by maintaining the highest standards of national security and public safety throughout the visa process," while declining to discuss specific internal deliberations.

President Trump also issued an executive order on January 20 requiring enhanced security checks for any foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States to prevent national security threats. The order also asked cabinet members to submit a list of proposed countries whose travel should be partially or completely suspended due to "extremely inadequate screening and inspection information."

The measure is part of a crackdown on immigration that Mr. Trump launched early in his second term.

It is also reminiscent of the travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries during President Trump's first term, a policy that went through several revisions before being upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
