A massive construction site is emerging in the middle of a desolate white sand area with dozens of machines operating loudly all day long, along with hundreds of workers working hurriedly. That is the picture at My Thuy port today, bringing much faith and hope for a great driving force to promote the socio-economic development of Quang Tri province.

Race against time
Arriving at My Thuy port (Hai An commune, Hai Lang district) right after the Lunar New Year holiday of At Ty 2025, we were really surprised and happy to see a large construction site being hurriedly constructed. In addition to some items such as the eastern breakwater, storage yard, casting yard, traffic roads and blocks classified as 1A, 1B, 2B, 2A of the temporary wharf that have been completed, many other items such as breakwater, weighing station, concrete mixing station, road, yard, well... are being urgently deployed by contractors.
Right from the moment we entered the construction site, we could clearly feel the urgent working atmosphere with dozens of machines from cranes, excavators, rollers, pile driving, leveling the ground... working busily. Along with that, hundreds of workers took turns working with the determination to bring the project to the finish line soon.
There are currently two packages under construction at My Thuy Port: Package XL01, with the 319 Corporation constructing the breakwater and wharf; Package XL02, with basic infrastructure and reinforced concrete structure, is constructed by the FECON - Long Hai Joint Stock Company Joint Venture. Engineer Nguyen Trung Kien, Deputy Site Commander of the main contractor, the FECON - Long Hai Joint Stock Company Joint Venture, said: "To meet the schedule for handing over wharf No. 1 at the end of 2025 and wharf No. 2 at the beginning of 2026, right after the Lunar New Year holiday, we mobilized more than 100 workers and all the machinery to work in 3 shifts continuously, racing against time."
In the middle of a massive construction site with dozens of machines working on pile driving, leveling and creating land... is the urgent working atmosphere of hundreds of workers. The atmosphere is more bustling when heavy trucks take turns transporting materials in and out of the construction site.
Having just finished welding a series of iron rings to complete the giant iron cages, worker Pham Van An took the opportunity to take off his safety glasses to wipe his sweat and also to rest for a few seconds. Mr. An said he returned to the construction site on January 6. Having received encouragement and thoughtful care about the regimes for workers, the working spirit of the workers returning after Tet was very enthusiastic.
Present at the construction site, Mr. Tran Van Dung - representative of the Project Management Board of My Thuy International Joint Stock Company (MTIP, the investor of My Thuy deep-water port project) said that in order to speed up the project's progress, workers were encouraged to take a late Tet holiday, and those who lived far away would only return home on the 27th and 28th of the 12th lunar month. In addition, the unit assigned a team to work on the construction site throughout Tet. "In order to create a productive working atmosphere in early spring, all work was prepared by the investor on the 5th, so that on the morning of the 6th of the 12th lunar month, they could start construction immediately," Mr. Dung shared.
Determined to bring the project to completion on schedule
The My Thuy Port Project was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 16/2019 for investment. The project covers an area of 685 hectares, with a total scale of 10 wharfs (developed in 3 phases), a total investment of 14,234 billion VND with an implementation schedule from 2018 to 2035, ensuring the reception of ships with a tonnage of up to 100,000 tons. In particular, phase 1 of the project will be implemented from 2018 to 2025, with a scale of 4 wharfs. However, due to objective and subjective reasons, the project has been "shelved" for many years and has just started again in March 2024.
Mr. Tran Van Dung added that the total investment for the 4 ports in phase 1 is 5,900 billion VND. “The 4 ports in phase 1 have a capacity of receiving 12 million tons/year. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The port is located in the East-West Economic Corridor, with the goal of becoming an international deep-water port, and in the future will form a regional logistics center with many cooperating units. MTIP aims to transit goods such as coal, wood chips, and industrial products,” said Mr. Dung. In particular, according to Mr. Dung: “This is a key project of Quang Tri province, so the leaders are very determined and interested in creating all favorable conditions to ensure construction. We, the investor, are also very determined to bring the project to the finish line on schedule.”
Another positive news is that while the port is under construction, many large investors are interested in My Thuy port. Specifically, at the meeting held at the end of December 2024, Head of the Provincial Economic Zone Management Board Pham Ngoc Minh informed that there are currently 8 investors proposing in the field of logistics and port logistics services that are studying investment in the area behind My Thuy port. For example, the projects proposed by investors include: Seaport logistics area with an area of about 86 hectares; My Thuy non-tariff cargo transit warehouse with a scale of 60 hectares; My Thuy port factory service area with a scale of 20 hectares...
Speaking at that meeting, Acting Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong agreed in principle to allow investors to study and invest in projects in the My Thuy port area to keep up with service progress and synchronization in the port, contributing to filling up the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone as well as solving employment, ensuring compliance with planning.
We believe that with the current progress, My Thuy deep-water port will be completed on schedule, put into use, and become a driving force for the development of the province's economy.
