Many parents believe that taking time off from school due to air pollution is only a temporary solution, the most important thing is to improve air quality and take preventive measures.
In response to the Ministry of Health's recommendation that preschool and primary schools should be considered for closure if the air quality index is at a hazardous level for 3 consecutive days, in addition to supporters, many parents do not want their children to... stay home from school.
In recent days, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) and his wife have been taking turns staying home to take care of their sick 5-year-old daughter. Mr. Dung's daughter has a bad cough and high fever. When the Ministry of Health recommended that children should consider staying home from school if the air quality is at a hazardous level for 3 consecutive days, Mr. Dung was very supportive.
"These days, Hanoi's air is heavily polluted. Not only my child, but many children in his class and in my residential area are sick. The air is at a hazardous level, greatly affecting children's health. When children are sick, parents have to take time off work, spend money on medical examinations and medicine for their children, and have to stay up all night to take care of sick children, so I support letting children stay home from school when the pollution is severe."
Going to school near home, many children still wear masks carefully due to the current air pollution situation.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Hoang Van Minh (Dong Da District, Hanoi), a parent of a 3rd grade student at Phuong Mai Primary School, shared: "Children exposed to polluted air for a long time can suffer from respiratory infections, asthma or other chronic diseases. These days, many children in my child's class have coughs, flu, etc. This proposal shows the Ministry of Health's concern for public health. However, I hope that the school will soon develop an effective online learning plan to support parents."
Many parents are worried that their children's health will be affected by air pollution.
In addition to support, some parents also expressed concerns if this proposal is implemented. Ms. Pham Thuy Hang (office worker, Dong Da District, Hanoi), whose child attends kindergarten, shared: "If students are allowed to stay home from school, parents like me will have a hard time arranging work and taking care of children. At the end of the year, my husband and I are both very busy. I think that just letting students go to school and not allowing them to participate in outdoor activities is fine."
Many parents are still subjective and do not remind their children to wear masks when going out.
Like Ms. Hang, many parents also find it difficult to cope if schools let students stay home, although they are also very concerned about the health of their children being affected by air pollution. Some opinions say that, with the current dangerous air pollution situation, schools need to equip more air purifiers in classrooms and provide specialized masks to students. Staying home from school is only a temporary solution, the most important thing is to improve air quality and have long-term preventive measures.
"The core issue is to address the root causes of air pollution, such as controlling industrial emissions, traffic and construction. School closures only help avoid immediate risks, but if air quality is not improved, children will still be the group affected in the long term," Hoang Van Minh suggested.
Parents are still negligent and subjective about their children's health.
Hanoi’s air quality index has been at hazardous levels in recent days, but in reality, many parents are still negligent and subjective about their children’s health. Many parents do not remind their children to wear masks when going to school or going out.
Faced with the alarming level of air pollution in Hanoi recently, in order to not affect the health of students, Ms. Do Minh Thu, Principal of Nguyen Tri Phuong Primary School (Hanoi) said that the school does not allow students to participate in collective activities in the schoolyard, turns on ventilation fans in classrooms, and encourages classes to plant trees...
