At the end of June, Mr. Nguyen Cao Tan (Ba Dinh, Hanoi) booked economy class tickets for 6 family members to travel to Con Dao at a price of 2.3 million/ticket/way (including taxes and fees).
A few days before the departure date, he continued to book tickets for 4 people to fly together, but the airfare skyrocketed. Although he searched and booked tickets on online ticketing sites such as traveloka.com, abay.vn or online ticketing sites of airlines, Mr. Tan was very surprised by the sudden increase in ticket prices for many flights, some flights increased by more than 200% compared to before.
“I booked another ticket almost a week before the departure date, but the price increased to 5.2 million VND/ticket/way (including taxes and fees). So, from the end of June until now, after less than 2 weeks, the ticket price has skyrocketed to 2.6 million VND, equivalent to 245% of the ticket price I booked on June 30,” said Mr. Tan.
Not only Mr. Tan, many other customers also said that those who booked tickets before July 1 for the route from Hanoi to tourist destinations such as Con Dao, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Can Tho, Da Nang had quite reasonable prices, from 2.3 - 3.7 million VND/ticket/way (including taxes and fees). However, for the same flight route, the same flight time, but in July, the ticket price suddenly increased, some routes increased to nearly 3 million VND/ticket.
A survey of ticket prices on July 14 showed that for the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route from July 16 to the end of August, one-way economy class tickets of Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air ranged from 3.2 to 3.8 million VND, 800 to 1.5 million VND higher than when booking tickets from the end of June and earlier.
There are no more tickets for the Hanoi - Con Dao route from July 14 to the end of September on abay.vn. Meanwhile, on traveloka.com, the price of economy class tickets ranges from 3.4 - 5.2 million VND/ticket/way, 1.1 - 2.9 million VND higher than the time of booking from the end of June.
Other flights such as Hanoi - Lam Dong; Hanoi - Can Tho, Hanoi - Da Nang of all airlines Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet Air, Vietravel Airlines are also 500 - 1.5 million VND/one-way ticket higher than the time of booking before June.
"Airlines have proactively increased flights on routes with high travel demand to overcome the shortage of tickets. However, due to the high demand for travel, ticket prices increasing on some routes and at some times is normal," said a representative of an airline.
For example, at present, ticket prices for Hanoi - Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang have doubled because Da Nang is hosting the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) 2024, so many people want to visit and enjoy the show.
This person also added: "It is normal for ticket prices to increase at the end of July and August because this is the time when students and teachers are on summer vacation, and many agencies also organize tours. Although ticket prices have increased, they are still within the regulated ceiling price range."
Faced with the increasing travel demand of people during the peak summer season of 2024, from the end of May 2025, the Civil Aviation Authority has requested airlines to increase flight frequencies.
Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines added about 2,000 flights after 9 p.m. every day, on routes between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Quy Nhon. Vietjet added 3,100 flights on its entire domestic flight network, equivalent to 1.4 million additional tickets.
Notably, after nearly 3 months of flight suspension, Pacific Airlines resumed flights on some domestic routes from June 26. Accordingly, Pacific Airlines will operate daily flights between Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Chu Lai with a total of 6-8 flights per day. During peak periods, the airline will increase flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue, and Tuy Hoa.
Mr. Bui Minh Dang, Head of the Aviation Transport Department (Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam) said that ticket prices increasing and decreasing is a normal rule, because when people's travel demand increases, ticket prices will increase accordingly.
“At present and until the end of August, people's travel needs are increasing, especially students who have just finished high school graduation exams and are waiting for university admission. Therefore, many families have arranged for their children to travel and relax after a hard time studying, reviewing for exams and waiting for university admission results." Mr. Dang said. Although the ticket price has increased, it is still within the price ceiling regulations of the Ministry of Transport.
