The entire Cam Trung commune (Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh) currently has 23 economic models with revenues ranging from 100 million VND/year to less than 1 billion VND. Among them, there are many models with "unique, strange" livestock breeds that bring high economic value.
In 2020, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong's family (Trung Tien village) started building a model of raising bamboo rats for breeding and commercial purposes after a long period of studying and traveling to many provinces and cities to learn from experience.
The family invested more than 100 million VND to build a barn, install air conditioners, cooling fans and other auxiliary systems. Initially, Mr. Cuong bought 40 pairs of breeding rats in Quang Ninh province at a price of 4 - 6 million VND/rat to raise.
Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong earns over 400 million VND in revenue each year from raising bamboo rats.
Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong said: “Dui is a strange animal in the area, so we have to be really careful in the care process, strictly following the technical process. Thanks to safe food sources such as corn, sugarcane, bamboo... and living in a temperature below 30°C, the dui is healthy and grows well. From the initial 40 breeding pairs, up to now, the family's dui herd has reproduced over 200. Currently, meat dui costs 500,000 VND/kg, breeding dui costs 2.2 million VND/kg; each year we earn more than 400 million VND”.
After a long time working abroad, in 2021, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuoc (Trung Tien village) returned to his hometown to start a business. Realizing the market demand, Mr. Phuoc boldly invested more than 400 million VND to build a mud-free eel farming model. On an area of 250m² , he arranged 7 tanks, raising 3,000 - 4,000 fish/tank.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuoc is researching to proactively source local breeds instead of importing eel breeds from Phu Yen province at high prices.
Mr. Phuoc shared: “Thanks to following farming techniques and focusing on disease prevention, the survival rate is high and the eels grow well. The main food source is earthworms mixed with bran, and the family's eel meat products are highly appreciated by the market. Every year, we sell over 3 tons of commercial eels at prices ranging from 100,000 - 170,000 VND/kg depending on the time. Currently, I am researching to proactively source local breeds, instead of importing from Phu Yen at high prices (from 3,500 - 4,500 VND/eel)”.
In addition to raising mud-free eels, Mr. Phuoc also raises Egyptian white chickens, supplying the market with over 3,000 eggs per month. Mr. Phuoc plans to build more eel tanks, expand the scale according to VietGap procedures, and move towards building products that meet OCOP standards to create a brand as well as increase product value.
Currently, meat bamboo rats cost 500,000 VND/kg, bamboo rat breeds are sold for 2.2 million VND/kg.
At this time, the commercial and breeding mink farming model of Mr. Pham Van Nhiem's family (Nam Thanh village) has also been launched. Along with investing in a systematic system of cages and cooling equipment, the family has bought 5 pairs of breeding mink for over 150 million VND to raise.
According to Mr. Pham Van Nhiem, in addition to proactive techniques and breeds, the facility will try to link with farms inside and outside the province to find sustainable output.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tien - Chairman of Cam Trung Commune People's Committee said: "The whole commune currently has 23 potential economic models, with revenue from 100 million VND/year to less than 1 billion VND. Among them, there are many models with "unique" livestock breeds with high economic value. The successful construction of these models not only helps people increase their income and improve their quality of life, but also helps the locality firmly consolidate the criteria for organizing production and developing the rural economy on the journey to build an advanced new rural commune".
Mud-free eel farming is the direction of many households in Cam Trung commune.
“On the local government side, we will continue to organize for cooperatives, cooperative groups, and people to visit and learn about livestock farming techniques at potential models inside and outside the province; propose specialized sectors to guide farmers on science and technology for new livestock; support people in accessing bank loans... Thereby, continuously expanding promising economic models, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development” – Mr. Nguyen Van Tien added.
