According to GizChina , this expert believes that iPhone users are encouraged to update their phones to the latest version of iOS as soon as possible, because otherwise, they risk losing access to their phones in the future. The reason is that older versions of iOS are about to lose essential functions, such as access to Apple Maps for navigation, Siri for voice control, App Store for essential applications, etc.
iPhone 5 is on the list of devices affected by Apple's new policy.
The upcoming update appears to be focused on iPhones running iOS 11.2.6 or earlier, leaving users of those devices without access to the core software. The iPhone 5 and older devices will be affected, but even iPhone 7 users are at risk if they haven’t updated their system software. The latest version of iOS for the iPhone 7 is iOS 15.7.5, which Apple released on April 10.
“Starting in early May, access to Apple services, except iCloud, will stop working on devices running iOS 11.2.6… Users may receive a notification to update,” user @StellaFudge said on Twitter.
In case you do not receive a notification to update your iPhone, you can do this yourself by using the Settings app on your phone, then go to General > Software Update and wait for your iPhone to download the update before installing it.
Apple has not commented on the rumor so far, but the company recently released an update to its help page that hinted at the plan. In the announcement, Apple confirmed that some older software versions will not work with some Apple services, including the App Store, Siri, and Maps. The company advised users to update their devices so they can continue using the services.
