NDO - During the 4-day Tet holiday (from the 30th to the 3rd day of Tet), Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received 24 cases of accidents caused by firecrackers, with the highest number of cases on the 30th day of Tet with 13 cases and the 1st day of Tet with 5 cases.
According to the Ministry of Health, during the 8-day Tet holiday, there were 481 emergency cases due to firecrackers and fireworks. Although this number decreased by 24.2% compared to the same period of 7 days of the Giap Thin Tet holiday, the consequences were still very heartbreaking.
According to a reporter at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital on February 2, the Department of Upper Limbs and Sports Medicine, Viet Duc Hospital is treating 3 patients who had accidents caused by firecrackers, of which 1 case has had surgery, 1 case has just been transferred to the operating room and 1 case is waiting for surgery.
Lying on a stretcher waiting for surgery, a young man (Nam Dinh) said he had an accident while buying firecrackers to make his own and while making the firecrackers, they suddenly exploded, seriously injuring his left hand.
"At that time, I didn't know anything. When I woke up, I was in the hospital," the young man said. After receiving first aid at a lower level, the young man was transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
Dr. Phan Ba Hai, Deputy Head of the Department of Upper Limbs and Sports Medicine, on duty on the 5th day of Tet, said that the patient had a broken arm and crushed left hand, and had to undergo surgery to amputate the thumb and a series of finger buds of the hand. "It's too late to regret now. I hope this is a lesson for everyone, no one should make their own fireworks and suffer the same serious consequences as me," the young man shared.
Waiting for surgery is a 25-year-old man also from Nam Dinh. According to the patient, he was given a large mortar shell. On the fourth day of Tet, he took it out to light. When he lit it, he saw the fuse starting to burn, so he threw it far away, but unexpectedly the shell exploded so quickly, causing his right hand to be crushed, possibly requiring multiple amputations. In addition, he also suffered abdominal trauma, an ear injury from the shell, and blurred vision.
Lying in pain on the hospital bed awaiting surgery, the male patient shared that he deeply regretted his foolishness. He did not expect that just lighting a firecracker would cause such serious injury.
Dr. Phan Ba Hai said that the number of firecracker accident cases that come to the hospital for emergency treatment during Tet every year are in serious and very serious condition, with some cases of very painful injuries.

Patients who use fireworks are mostly very young, mainly buying fireworks online and watching how to make fireworks on Youtube, then learning how to make fireworks according to online instructions for fun, not for sale.
"Cases of accidents caused by exploding fireworks mainly result in injuries to both hands, facial damage, and eyeball damage. When making fireworks, the fuse burns too quickly and does not ensure technical standards, so it often explodes in the hands, causing both hands to be crushed. Or when lighting fireworks and looking directly at them, the fireworks explode, causing damage to the jaw and face, and ruptured eyeballs, causing vision loss (accounting for 10-20% of hospitalizations due to exploding fireworks). There are many cases of ruptured eyeballs that doctors have to remove during surgery; many children are blind," said Dr. Hai.
In cases of severe eye injuries, doctors here had to invite doctors from the Central Eye Hospital to consult and coordinate emergency surgery.
According to Dr. Hai, the situation of buying and using firecrackers to make fireworks for play is happening easily, causing serious consequences, especially for teenagers, greatly affecting their future when they lose arms, have damaged eyes, or suffer severe burns...
Before that, in the days before Tet, many hospitals continuously received victims injured by firecrackers. In addition to injuries to the face, hands, and eyes, many children admitted to the hospital also suffered burns all over their bodies. According to doctors, compared to other types of burns, burns caused by firecrackers are considered very serious.
In the last three months of 2024, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received 21 cases of accidents caused by firecrackers, more than 50% of which were children.
Doctors recommend that people, especially parents, increase control and educate their children to avoid them buying fireworks to make their own, endangering their lives and those around them.
