Special bacterial infection, father of 3 children had to have legs amputated 6 times

Those were the words of concern shared by Dr. Hoang Manh Ha, Head of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, when he took us to visit patient Le Van Chat.

Dr. Ha added that Mr. Chat is now out of shock, but there are still other risks such as poisoning, sepsis, and bleeding. Therefore, the patient still needs to use strong antibiotics and needs to be closely monitored.

Mr. Chat's body is severely weakened, there will be many more surgeries because the infection at the cut tip is still not under control, the treatment time is prolonged, the estimated cost is hundreds of millions of dong, not to mention the previous patient spent more than 300 million dong.

"The patient is the breadwinner of the family. His eldest son has cerebral palsy and has been bedridden for many years. To save his life, the doctor had to amputate his left leg, which meant the patient became disabled. It was a huge mental shock.

Perhaps he had heard our conversation, Mr. Chat tried to turn his body to face inside to hide his emotions.

Every time this man struggled, yellow fluid and blood oozed from the cut on his left leg, soaking the white bandages. I saw him shiver and move, his gaunt face covered in sweat contorted in extreme pain, tears welling up from his closed eyes.

But, it seems that those physical pains are hard to compare with the terrible torment and conflict in the heart of this man, the pillar of the family.

Standing by her husband's hospital bed, Le Thi Dung (born in 1982, Mr. Chat's wife) still had a look of shock on her face. Looking up with red, swollen eyes, Dung sobbed and said that since her husband's accident, she had not had a full night's sleep or a full meal.

Ms. Dung confided that she has stomach, colon and bone and joint diseases, and has to take care of her eldest daughter, Le Thi Ha (born 2001), who has cerebral palsy and has been bedridden for 23 years. Her second daughter was born in 2005, and her youngest son was born in 2012 and is still in school.

Therefore, the burden of life for a family of 5 people falls heavily on the shoulders of the farmer husband Le Van Chat.

Ms. Dung said that the storm started in mid-2022, when Mr. Chat was diagnosed with pancreatitis and hepatitis and had to be treated at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and K Hospital.

"The debt of more than 100 million VND for his medical treatment that time had not been paid, then at the end of November 2023, he suddenly got a whole-body infection. Debt on debt, the total principal debt up to now is more than 400 million, the family is bankrupt and cannot borrow any more.
