BHG - After 3 years of implementation, the project "Building a model for fattening beef cattle and treating livestock waste with biological products" in some districts of the Ha Giang Stone Plateau is opening up a new direction for farmers, helping to increase economic efficiency and protect the environment sustainably.
In the period of 2022 - 2024, from the Central Agricultural Extension Fund, the Ha Giang Agricultural Extension Center has implemented a model of fattening beef cattle, the specialty brand of Ha Giang Golden Beef and treating livestock waste with biological products, with a total scale of over 270 cows in Meo Vac, Yen Minh and Dong Van districts. For 50 households participating in the project, they were fully supported with internal and external parasite removal drugs, ensuring 1 dose/cow; mixed feed with a protein content of 16%, equivalent to 270 kg/cow. With the form of "hand-holding", the Center organized 6 training courses; built 5 demonstration sites; brought 180 households to visit the model to master the techniques of selecting suitable cows for fattening, performing proper care, removing parasites before raising and treating waste with biological products.

Mr. Ly Mi Sinh, Na Tau village, Huu Vinh commune (Yen Minh) shared: “Previously, I raised cattle using traditional methods, paying little attention to nutrition or regular deworming for the herd. After participating in the model, I followed the scientific fattening process, helping the herd increase in weight from 260 kg/head to 330 kg/head in just 3 months. In addition, I also proactively cut more sweet grass and mixed it with corn starch, ensuring an abundant source of food for the cattle.”
The use of biological products in waste treatment has contributed to reducing environmental pollution, saving costs and collecting more than 350 tons of organic fertilizer to fertilize crops in a biosafe way. With high efficiency, although the project has ended, many households still maintain the model for economic development. Currently, Cat Ly Cooperative (Vi Xuyen) continues to implement linkages according to the commodity value chain, purchasing all products for people and expanding cooperation with 807 households in 22 communes in the province to raise more than 2,700 fattened beef cattle, build beef processing factories, restaurants to sell products, meeting the needs of people and tourists.
Comrade Pham Thi Thoa, Director of the Ha Giang Agricultural Extension Center said: “From the initial scale, seeing the effectiveness of fattening beef cattle, combined with treating livestock waste with biological products, 80 more households have proactively applied and expanded the model to over 150 cows. With the achieved results, the Center will continue to implement agricultural extension programs and projects to change people's production thinking, promptly introduce new technical advances into livestock development, and maximize the potential and advantages of the region".
According to the report, by the end of 2024, the total herd of Ha Giang Golden cows will reach more than 130,500 heads. The output of fresh beef for slaughter in the whole province is estimated at 4,863 tons, of which 3,809 tons are in the 4 districts of the Stone Plateau. Golden cows are an old indigenous breed, closely associated with the life, customs and practices of the highland people. In addition to raising them for meat, people also use cows in agricultural cultivation. This breed of cows has good resistance, adapts to harsh climates, and can withstand harsh farming conditions. Cows can reach an average weight of 300 - 500 kg, giving high meat yield, soft, sweet, nutritious, and are popular in the market. With its unique value, Ha Giang Golden beef products have been granted Geographical Indications by the Intellectual Property Office since 2019.
