Replicating the machine planting model, freeing up labor for farmers

Tray plating and transplanting machines are becoming more and more popular.

Nam Phong Commune (Phu Xuyen District) is a purely agricultural locality. This is considered one of the first localities in Hanoi to apply the tray seedling and transplanting machine model in rice production.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen, representative of Phu Phong Cooperative (Nam Phong Commune) said that since 2011, the unit has purchased 3 rice transplanters to serve farmers. By 2017, there was no more area in the commune where rice was transplanted by hand.

“The advantage of the tray seeding and transplanting method is that rice cultivation is more leisurely, production costs are lower than transplanting rice by hand, while rice productivity is 10-15% higher…” - Ms. Tuyen shared more.

In Ung Hoa district, the model of rice planting and transplanting machines has also been widely applied in recent years. Director of Dong Tien Agricultural Cooperative (Ung Hoa district) Nguyen Van Dai said that in 2019, the unit mobilized capital from members to buy 4 transplanting machines.

According to Mr. Dai, currently the area of machine planting in Dong Tien commune is only about 25%, but this rate is increasing day by day. Local farmers are also increasingly aware of the effectiveness of applying tray seedlings and machine planting in rice production.

Statistics from the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development show that in the 2024 Spring crop, the rice cultivation area using tray seedlings and transplanters in the city will reach about 14%. This figure is still modest, but it is a positive change if we know that, from 2024 onwards, the method of cultivating tray seedlings and transplanters only accounted for about 3% of the total rice cultivation area of the whole city.

More policies to support farmers

According to Director of Dai Thang Agricultural Cooperative (Ung Hoa District) Nguyen Van Vy, the application of tray seeding and transplanting machines in rice production brings many values. Not only does it contribute to increasing rice productivity by 10-15%, but it also helps free up labor for farmers.

“Currently, Hanoi has a mechanism to support the purchase of transplanting machines, however, there is no support for the tray seedling stage. This is also a very costly stage in terms of production investment costs. Therefore, we recommend that departments, branches and localities propose to the city or have policies to provide additional support for farmers…” - Director of Dong Tien Agricultural Cooperative (Ung Hoa district) Nguyen Van Dai .

However, along with objective factors such as field terrain, high investment costs for machinery and equipment, and technical requirements for operators are barriers that prevent tray-seeding and transplanting methods from being widely applied in Hanoi.

To specify Resolution No. 08/2023/NQ-HDND of the Hanoi People's Council, aiming to promote mechanization in agricultural production in general, the Hanoi People's Committee recently issued a decision to support the application of tray seedling and transplanting machines in rice production.

Specifically, in 2024 - 2025, Hanoi City will allocate about 37 billion VND to support districts to purchase a total of 201 rice transplanters. Of which, in 2024, there will be 89 machines (over 16.5 billion VND) and in 2025, there will be 112 machines (nearly 20.6 billion VND).

Head of the Economic Department of Ung Hoa District Pham Van Hoach assessed that the policy of supporting the purchase of rice transplanters by the Hanoi People's Committee will basically overcome the current difficulties in promoting mechanization of rice cultivation; meeting the right and exact wishes of farmers.

According to Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Manh Phuong, the introduction of mechanized machinery into rice cultivation in particular has significantly contributed to changing farmers' production thinking, promoting the intensive farming process, and gradually forming large-scale, concentrated, high-quality commodity rice production areas.

In the coming time, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to coordinate with localities to support organizations and individuals to access the support policy to buy transplanters from the City People's Committee's budget according to Resolution No. 08/2023/NQ-HDND, ensuring efficiency and compliance with regulations, aiming to promote mechanization in the development of the rice industry.
