Yuan Forecast
The rebound in consumer prices is good news for Chinese policymakers and investors, who have been worried about deflation in the country. China has been trying for months to stimulate consumption and prices in the economy, as consumers tighten their belts and foreign investors pull out of their investments, a situation that could lead to a dangerous deflationary spiral.
Unlike many other major economies, China faces a prolonged period of deflation, following a brief period of rising prices in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The risk is that falling prices will lead to consumers hoarding more cash and companies curbing spending, putting pressure on economic growth.
The NBS report also showed that core inflation - a measure that strips out volatile food and energy costs - rose 1.2% in February from a year earlier, the highest in more than two years and far exceeding the 0.4% increase in January.
