Citing CNBC News, the company said it will implement a production investment plan worth up to $500 billion in the US through a partnership system over the next four years.
“Adding manufacturing in the US helps us better meet the huge and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, while strengthening our supply chain and increasing our resilience,” said CEO Jensen Huang.
The announcement of the production plan comes as President Donald Trump has implemented a series of tariff measures to narrow the trade deficit and call on businesses to bring production back to the US. Accordingly, Mr. Trump has imposed a 32% tax on goods from Taiwan - where Nvidia's GPUs are mainly produced - along with a tax rate of up to 145% on Chinese goods. This policy also poses a big risk to technology corporations such as Apple - the company that produces most of its devices, including iPhones, in China.
The market took a sudden turn when the Trump administration announced on April 11 that it would exempt chips, smartphones, computers, and other technology devices and related components from reciprocal tariffs. However, on April 13, President Trump announced that he would announce a new set of tariffs on imported semiconductors the following week.
Nvidia said in a blog post that it has now put about 93,000 square meters of manufacturing space into operation. Production of Blackwell AI chips has already begun in Phoenix, Arizona, at a manufacturing partner facility run by Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC). Nvidia is also collaborating with Amkor and Siliconware Precision Industries, two companies that provide chip packaging and testing solutions, at the same location.
Although Nvidia develops its own graphics processing units (GPUs), hardware manufacturing is still handled by partners like TSMC on a contract basis.
The company also said it is building supercomputer manufacturing facilities in Texas, specifically with Foxconn in Houston and Wistron in Dallas. Mass production at these two factories is expected to begin within the next 12 to 15 months.
In terms of technology, Nvidia will utilize its own solutions to create “digital twins” for the above factories, and develop specialized robotic systems to serve the automation process in production.
