According to iMore , TSMC is a key supply chain partner and is responsible for providing chips for Apple's best products today, including the iPad Pro M4 and iPad Air M2. It is also a company that works with countless other companies, including manufacturing chips capable of handling AI (artificial intelligence) workloads and sensitive military applications. For that reason, the US government is always worried that something could happen to TSMC's factory in Taiwan when geopolitical tensions arise.
Many sensitive technologies are located at TSMC's factory in Taiwan.
TSMC’s ability to remotely disable machines could help alleviate that concern, including the erasure of sensitive information related to the machines. According to Bloomberg, this remote disabling applies to ASML’s line of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, the only company in the industry that provides EUV machines.
EUV is a technology that harnesses high-frequency light waves to print the smallest microchip transistors available, creating chips with AI applications as well as more sensitive military applications.
TSMC Q1 Profit Beats Expectations
Apple has previously sought to reduce its reliance on manufacturing in China due to trade tensions between the country and the US as well as supply chain issues during the Covid-19 pandemic that have caused shortages of iPhones. Reliance on TSMC manufacturing could also be an issue for Apple in the future if tensions between China and Taiwan increase.
