'People are aware of sorting, I collect trash and put it back in the car'

The conference was organized by the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ho Chi Minh City Police on June 27. Chaired by Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City; Colonel Le Quang Dao, Head of the Investigation Security Agency, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Police; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh My, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City.

At the conference, Mr. Vo Van Thien, Head of the Southern Working Group, Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, shared his own family's story: "My house is in an alley, the collection vehicles of public utility companies cannot enter, so we have to register for the household waste collection service. My family is also aware of sorting the waste into different bags, but in the morning, the person who collects the waste puts these bags together in their vehicle. This makes me wonder what is the point of sorting waste at the source."

According to Mr. Thien, sorting waste at source is a good thing, the rate of people understanding this is very high, but the way of organizing waste collection is not reasonable. Therefore, Mr. Thien suggested that Ho Chi Minh City needs to find a way to collect waste more effectively. Not to mention, the structure of garbage collection vehicles needs to be redesigned to be suitable for waste collection and classification.

Mr. Vo Van Thien said that it is necessary to reorganize the collection of waste that has been classified at the source.

At the same time, Mr. Thien also proposed a solution to collect and treat bulky waste at people's homes. "I heard that Phu Nhuan District has organized the collection of bulky waste. This is a good thing that the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City can replicate to all levels to implement. These are small tasks but have great significance, contributing to making the city greener, cleaner and more beautiful," said Mr. Thien.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance, shared that if we want a green - clean - beautiful environment, we must start with people's awareness.

"Students are taught to throw trash in the right place, but adults litter on the streets and urinate in places where urinating is prohibited. Adults set an example but have not set it. Violators must be severely punished," said Mr. Hai.

In addition, Mr. Hai also wondered why after the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention was issued, no one has been punished for smoking in the wrong place and littering cigarette butts. According to Mr. Hai, everyone thinks that this mistake is too normal, does not harm anyone, so it has not been strictly handled.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance, commented that raising people's awareness of environmental protection is an important issue today.

"Regarding the issue of graffiti in public works and houses, the work of recording and punishing in Ho Chi Minh City is very good. In District 8, I remember a time ago, there was a public service company that was paid to collect trash on the river. They just collected it, but people just dumped it into the river. This is not effective," said Mr. Hai.

Mr. Hai suggested that it is necessary to invest effectively in garbage vacuum cleaners or garbage collectors. "In my opinion, the classification of garbage at source has not been effectively promoted. People use batteries as hazardous waste but throw them into household waste, making it very difficult for garbage collectors to dig them out. Currently, households that classify garbage at home are very rare. Only 50% of the households around my house know how to classify garbage, the rest put everything in black bags for collection vehicles. Therefore, the most important thing is how to raise people's awareness of environmental protection," Mr. Hai shared.

Ho Chi Minh City has built and issued decisions to recognize 1,722 residential areas that meet the criteria of Clean, Green, Environmentally Friendly Residential Areas, recognized 264 wards, communes, and towns that meet the criteria of Clean, Green, and Environmentally Friendly Wards, Communes, and Towns at the district level, and 223 Solidarity - Affection - Self-Management residential areas. At the Green Living Festival 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee commended 50 residential areas and 50 wards, communes, and towns with outstanding achievements in building clean, green, and environmentally friendly residential areas, wards, communes, and towns.

In the coming time, the Fatherland Front system at all levels will strengthen the mobilization of businesses and people to join hands in supporting and accompanying the construction of clean, green and environmentally friendly residential areas, wards, communes and towns.

At the same time, continue to overcome existing problems such as indiscriminate dumping of garbage on sidewalks, roads, manholes, canals, etc.; violations of environmental hygiene; the situation where people feel insecure about increasingly sophisticated and dangerous property fraud tricks due to the disclosure of personal information, etc.
