New Chinese tariffs on a range of US fruits, vegetables and other essential foods took effect on March 10.
However, people in the billion-people country seem to be unconcerned about the escalation of the trade war between the world's two leading economies.
The 10% and 15% tariffs on US agricultural products, including meat, grains and cotton, come after US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on all Chinese goods to 20% across the board last week.
Vendors at a central Beijing market said they were not worried about sales, despite the possibility of rising prices.
A fruit merchant named Shi said that if prices increase, people will consume less imported goods.
He predicted that the market share of domestic goods would increase and this was something people could accept.
Mr. Shi shared that domestically grown fruits often sell better.
He plans to reduce the number of fruits sourced from the United States and increase options from other countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia.
Elderly consumer He Yulian said she was less concerned about the US-China trade war, adding that what she cared about was product quality, not origin.
According to her, ordinary people can try to buy less or no products of American origin.
However, Ms. He Yulian also said that for certain products such as milk and infant formula, she still prioritizes imported goods over domestic goods.
Mr. Shi commented that although both sides imposed tariffs, this trade war will make Chinese goods "become stronger".
However, in the short term, he admitted, people's daily spending could still be affected.
