GĐXH - After many times of self-enemas to clean the colon and treat constipation, the patient suffered from severe pain and bleeding so he was taken to the emergency room.

According to information from Lang Son General Hospital, doctors at this unit have just admitted a male patient (78 years old, in Cao Loc district, Lang Son) to the hospital with severe abdominal pain accompanied by bloody stools, rapid pulse, and low blood pressure.

Based on the medical history, the patient had previously used anal enema several times at home to clean the colon and treat constipation. During this enema, the patient experienced severe pain in the lower abdomen and bleeding through the anus, so his family took him to the emergency room.

At the hospital, examination and test results showed fluid and gas in the abdomen, suspected of rectal rupture. Immediately, doctors consulted and performed emergency surgery to treat the injury.

During surgery, it was noted that the patient had ruptured the last part of the colon, causing stool and digestive juices to spill into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis. The surgical team sutured the ruptured colon, cleaned the abdominal cavity, and placed an artificial anus.

Doctors said that although the patient's life was saved due to timely surgery, due to his old age and weak physical condition, his health and daily activities were severely affected now and in the future.

Do not arbitrarily use enemas to treat constipation at home.

According to doctors, not only the above patient, recently, many hospitals have received cases of patients with perforated colon due to self-enemas at home for the purpose of detoxification, treatment, weight loss, or beauty.

However, experts emphasize that there is currently no scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of this method. Meanwhile, enema by pumping water into the anus will reduce the stimulation of the rectum, in the long term, it will cause loss of rectal reflex, without enema, there will be no defecation.

At the same time, loss of rectal reflex also increases the risk of rectal rupture during subsequent enemas, because the patient no longer feels the urge to defecate.

Furthermore, when people perform self-enemas, it is easy to inject too much water into the rectum, causing rupture. On the other hand, when water is introduced in an unnatural way, it will push the intestinal microflora into an imbalanced state, causing colitis, which will also cause the risk of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, impaired bowel function, and disruption of the intestinal microflora.

Therefore, experts recommend that colonic enemas are a treatment method that should be prescribed by specialists and performed at licensed medical facilities. People need to be careful when choosing detoxification or cleansing methods with the aim of removing toxins from the body and improving health.

Instead of applying unscientific methods, each person should protect their digestive system by drinking lots of water, eating lots of fruits, vegetables, etc. At the same time, limit beer, alcohol, red meat, and greasy foods. In addition, regular exercise also helps the digestive system become healthier every day.

When there are unusual signs of health, or suffering from anal or rectal diseases, you need to go to a medical facility for examination and treatment. Do not douche at home to avoid unfortunate incidents.
