According to the Straits Times newspaper on March 26, an Australian man (about 40 years old) has lived for 105 days with a titanium artificial heart while waiting for a heart transplant, marking a record long time using this device.

The team said the patient suffered from severe heart failure and underwent a six-hour operation at St. Vincent's Hospital Sydney on November 22, 2024, to have an artificial heart implanted while waiting for a donor heart to be transplanted.

The patient was discharged from hospital in early February this year, becoming the first person in the world to leave hospital with a titanium artificial heart, according to a team from Bivacor, Monash University and other institutions.

By early March, the man had received a donated heart transplant and is now recovering well.

Dr Chris Hayward, a cardiologist at St. Vincent's Hospital Sydney, said the device has the potential to completely change the way heart failure is treated.

The artificial heart was invented by Mr. Daniel Timms - founder and chief technology officer of the US-Australian medical company Bivacor.

The device uses a magnetic levitation rotor to pump blood to the body and lungs, applying the same technology as the magnetic levitation bullet train system in Japan, reducing friction, eliminating wear and tear and increasing the device's lifespan to more than 10 years, far surpassing current artificial hearts that use expansion chambers or pump diaphragms.

Bivacor collaborated with many international experts in the early stages of development, including Associate Professor Nobuyuki Kurita of Gunma University and Professor Toru Masuzawa of Ibaraki University, Japan - a leading expert in magnetic levitation technology.

They have been involved in the project since 2001 and helped develop the optimal magnetic levitation technology for this artificial heart.

Dr Chris Hayward believes that within the next decade, artificial hearts could become an alternative solution for patients who cannot wait or do not have a donor heart.

With advanced technology and support from experts around the world, Bivacor's artificial heart has become a major step forward in medicine, especially in the treatment of end-stage heart failure when the number of donated hearts is still scarce.
