According to Nation (Thailand) on March 29, social networks in Thailand are praising the medical team at the Police Hospital in Bangkok, when doctors performed outdoor surgery to save a patient while having to evacuate urgently due to aftershocks of a major earthquake in Myanmar.
The beautiful image above was posted by Facebook user Tony Lim on March 28, and then spread widely on social networks. In the recorded photo, the medical team at the Police Hospital is performing surgery on an emergency case while the Bangkok area is suffering from severe aftershocks of the earthquake.
Recounting the incident, police lieutenant colonel Waranyu Jiramrit, nicknamed Toey, who was also the doctor who performed the emergency outdoor surgery, said the patient needed to have his colon removed.
The surgery was proceeding as planned, but just as the team was about to close the abdominal incision, the aftershocks hit. Dr. Toey and the surgical team immediately decided to move the patient to a safer area outside the operating room.
After assessing the situation, the team determined that the patient needed urgent surgery to close the abdominal incision. If left open, the patient would risk bowel displacement, or the surgical site would be exposed to air, leading to complications.
Given the urgency of the situation, they decided to perform the surgery outside the operating room and completed the surgery in just 10 minutes.
Since this was the final step in closing the abdomen, safety was the top priority. The team followed strict hygiene protocols, using sterile gloves and equipment similar to those used in an operating room. The patient is now stable and recovering in the ward.
“I personally had no idea that these images were being shared on social media and receiving so much praise. I had just finished treating the patient and writing a medical report for the hospital. I was simply doing my duty as a doctor to save the patient’s life to the best of my ability,” said Dr. Toey.
The total number of people killed in Bangkok due to the aftershocks of the Myanmar earthquake is now 10.

On March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar created aftershocks that spread to Chiang Mai and Bangkok (Thailand) as well as China and Vietnam. People in the areas panicked and ran out of buildings.
So far, the earthquake has killed at least 144 people in Myanmar, with 732 injured, with the death toll estimated to be in the tens of thousands.
An earthquake aftershock has caused a 30-story building under construction in Bangkok to collapse, killing at least eight people. Rescue operations at the building are continuing on the morning of March 29, in an effort to find more than 100 people believed to be trapped under the rubble.
