Traditionally, on January 16, in Hoi An, the Lantern Festival is also the time when people in Cam Nam ward organize the sticky corn festival. However, due to many objective and subjective factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, corn crop failure, and natural disasters, this festival has been suspended since 2019.
This year 2024, the festival will be restored and is scheduled to take place on March 16-17 (February 7-8 of the lunar calendar). In order to have products to display and demonstrate culinary processing from corn, many households in Cam Nam ward have prepared everything for the festival.
While weeding his family's corn field in Con Lon field, Mr. Nguyen A (residing in Thanh Nam block, Cam Nam ward) said that his family has 4 sao of land growing sticky corn. Participating in this year's corn festival, he planted 10kg of seeds. Up to now, his family's corn field is in the stage of sprouting young seeds and the harvest date is right on time for the festival.
“When I bring corn to the event, I will prepare many delicious and interesting dishes for locals and tourists to enjoy. To make the corn sweet and safe for people to eat, I do not spray pesticides, limit inorganic fertilizers and use organic fertilizers instead,” Mr. A shared.
Also residing in Thanh Nam block, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thai said that this year her family cultivated 2 sao of sticky corn to participate in the festival. In recent years, this event has been interrupted, which local corn growers are very regretful about.
“This year there is a festival, I have prepared quite carefully to participate. Through this festival, I hope to invite tourists to the corn growing land not only to enjoy but also to admire the charming river scenery that has nurtured bumper corn crops,” Ms. Thai shared.
Ms. Huynh Pham Thuy Lan - Vice Chairman of Cam Nam Ward People's Committee, and Head of the sticky corn festival organizing committee, said that the whole ward has 12 households growing corn on 10 hectares of land.
This year’s corn festival has many unique and attractive cultural events, promising to attract many people and tourists such as: worshiping the god of agriculture; displaying OCOP products; demonstrations of lantern making and carpentry; stalls selling local specialties such as rice cakes, mussel salad, fried corn, cooked corn; folk dancing, releasing flower lanterns, etc.
