Promoting the role of "old age, bright example", the elderly in Ha Tinh have become a pioneering force, "tall trees" in building cultural life, preserving and promoting the heritage of their homeland.

Although he is 92 years old this year, veteran Truong Hong Loi (Ho Do commune, Loc Ha district) still contributes many practical ideas to the Party cell and mass organizations in the movements of building new rural areas and building local cultural life.

The elderly set a good example

Arriving at Thach Long commune (Thach Ha) at the end of September 2023, in the bright colors of the countryside striving to reach the finish line of a model new-style rural commune, I felt the atmosphere become more bustling and joyful due to the vibrant cultural and artistic activities of the elderly. At the cultural house of the model new-style rural residential area in Dai Dong village, to the cheerful music, members of the health club were enthusiastically practicing.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dao (75 years old) - Vice President of Dai Dong Village Elderly Association said: “The association has 81 members, including 31 men and 50 women. From 2021 to now, after the Intergenerational Self-Help Club was established, elderly members have actively participated in cultural, artistic and sports movements. Among them, the following clubs have been established: health care, folk dance, volleyball, and art troupe. These activities not only bring health and joy to the elderly but also create an optimistic atmosphere that spreads throughout the community.”

It is known that recently, the Elderly Performing Arts Team of Dai Dong village representing Thach Long commune participated in the "Elderly Singing" contest in Thach Ha district and won first prize, being the core force of the district unit participating and winning third prize in the contest at the provincial level. Currently, 8/8 Elderly Associations of Thach Long commune have cultural, artistic, sports, and folk dance clubs attracting hundreds of members. The clubs have created a playground to help the elderly live happily and healthily, thereby encouraging their children and grandchildren to constantly strive to contribute to building their homeland.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Duong - Secretary of the Party Committee of Thach Long commune said: "In the process of building the new rural area, we highly appreciate the role of the Association of the Elderly in participating in implementing the assigned criteria. At the same time, the elderly are also the core force leading the way in propagating and mobilizing their children and grandchildren to actively participate in contributing to the construction and completion of cultural criteria such as: building cultural houses, sports areas, planting and protecting green fences, landscapes of historical and cultural relics...".

Along with Thach Long, in many localities in Thach Ha such as: Luu Vinh Son, Thach Lien, Tan Lam Huong, Viet Tien, Thach Hai, Thach Dai..., the Elderly Association has also become the core force in the movement to build grassroots cultural life.

Mr. Nguyen Luong Linh - Chairman of the Elderly Association of Thach Ha district said: "Up to now, the Elderly Association of the whole district has established 209 cultural, artistic and sports clubs. Every year, the Association at all levels organizes many sports and artistic tournaments attracting hundreds of athletes and thousands of elderly people as well as a large number of people to respond, creating a vibrant atmosphere. In addition, the elderly members have also actively played their role in building cultural families and model families. Up to now, 98% of the elderly members' families have achieved the title of cultural family...".

Not only in Thach Ha, the Elderly Association in many localities across the province has also become a core force in promoting the role of building cultural life in residential areas and building new rural areas. Typical examples are the Elderly Associations in the districts of Cam Xuyen, Nghi Xuan, Duc Tho, Loc Ha, Ky Anh Town, Ha Tinh City...

According to information from the Ha Tinh Elderly Association, promoting the movement "Old age, bright example" associated with Party building work, performing political tasks in localities, up to now, the whole province has 6,920 elderly people participating in the work of the Party, government and mass organizations. Currently, 216/216 communes, wards and towns in the whole province have 3,415 cultural, artistic and sports clubs with a total of 78,545 elderly people participating. In the past time, actively participating in the work of building new rural areas, civilized urban areas, model residential areas, model gardens, the elderly in the whole province have donated 100,368 m2 of land, contributed 240,453 working days and 4.8 billion VND.

In addition, the elderly also take the lead and encourage their children and grandchildren to implement grassroots democracy regulations, implement conventions, village regulations, and cultural lifestyles in weddings, funerals, and festivals; upgrade and repair local cultural relics and martyrs' cemeteries...

Contribute to preserving intangible cultural heritage

Ha Tinh has Vi and Giam folk songs, representative intangible cultural heritages of humanity that have been recognized by UNESCO, and Ca Tru, an intangible heritage of humanity that needs urgent protection. In recent times, these heritages have been increasingly preserved and promoted in community life, spreading widely to domestic and international friends. To achieve this, along with the efforts of authorities at all levels, departments, branches, and organizations, the role of the elderly is of great significance. Currently, the whole province has 3 People's Artists (NNND) and dozens of Meritorious Artists (NNUT) who have been awarded titles by the President, most of whom are members of the Elderly Association.

After a long period of dedication, now entering the age of "resting", the People's Artists: Nguyen Ban (Nghi Xuan), Vu Thi Thanh Minh; Meritorious Artists Pham The Nhuan, Hoang Ba Ngoc (Cam Xuyen), Dang Thi Minh Nguyet (Ha Tinh City)... still continuously research, preserve and pass on to the next generation the songs of their ancestors. Among them, many people also hold the role of chairpersons of the local folk song clubs Vi, Giam, Ca Tru.

People's Artist Vu Thi Thanh Minh - Head of the Vi and Giam Folk Song Club of Cam My Commune (Cam Xuyen) expressed: "For me, preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of my homeland is not only love but also responsibility. I often tell my husband (Meritorious Artist Pham The Nhuan), even though I am old, as long as I still have the strength, I will still sing and pass on the folk songs and Vi melodies to the younger generation."

Although they have reached a rare age this year, the couple Meritorious Artist Pham The Nhuan and People's Artist Vu Thi Thanh Minh (in Cam My commune, Cam Xuyen district) are still passionate about preserving and promoting the heritage of Vi and Giam folk songs.

Along with actively preserving and transmitting, the Ha Tinh Elderly also constantly promotes the intangible cultural heritage of their homeland to domestic and international friends. Thanh Sen Folk Song and Dance Club (Ha Tinh City) gathers 20 members, of which 80% of the elderly members are typical representatives. Established nearly 3 years ago, but under the leadership of Ms. Vo Thi Kieu Thanh (Chairwoman of the Club) and the sponsorship of the Vietnam Folk Arts Association in Ha Tinh, the Club has performed and participated in many live events as well as programs on television stations in Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Nguyen...

In May 2023, the Club was invited by the Thailand - Vietnam Friendship Association of Na Khon Pha Nom province to perform at the program celebrating the 133rd birthday of President Ho Chi Minh and the 47th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and Vietnam.

These days, the elderly in Ha Tinh are actively responding to the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam, the Elderly Singing Festival in the Northern provinces and cities taking place in Ha Tinh city.

The festival is a playground for the elderly to exchange arts, improve their spiritual life, live happily, live healthily, create good social relationships, and set a good example for their children and grandchildren to follow. At the same time, it is also an opportunity for the elderly in Ha Tinh to promote their pioneering role in actively preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the nation and homeland.
