Sitting a lot is not good, so is standing a lot okay?

New research published in the International Journal of Epidemiology has found that in the long term, standing more than sitting does not improve cardiovascular health and may actually increase the risk of blood circulation problems, according to the medical website Medical Express.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Sydney (Australia), included 83,013 participants who did not have heart disease at the start of the study.

Standing a lot does not improve heart health and may increase the risk of blood circulation problems due to prolonged standing.

The authors used data on new-onset heart disease and circulatory disease collected over a period of 7 to 8 years from the participants, to investigate the impact of prolonged sitting and prolonged standing on cardiovascular disease. These data were measured using a wearable device similar to a smartwatch.

The results found that in the long term, standing does not improve cardiovascular health - including coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure, but can increase the risk of blood circulation problems caused by standing for long periods, such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis, according to Medical Express.

However, the results showed that standing a lot did not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Researchers also found that sitting more than 10 hours a day increased the risk of both cardiovascular disease and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (a condition in which the heart rate increases abnormally when standing).

This suggests that it is best to be more physically active throughout the day.

The bottom line is that standing for too long will not compensate for a sedentary lifestyle and may pose risks to some people's circulation, said lead author Dr Matthew Ahmadi, from the University of Sydney.

Although the researchers found that standing more did not reap health benefits, they cautioned against sitting for long periods of time.

The best way to reduce the risk of heart disease for people who sit a lot

There are other ways for sedentary people to improve their heart health, says Dr. Ahmadi.

This means that people who regularly sit or stand for long periods of time should schedule regular exercise during the day.

For people who regularly sit for long periods of time, the best way to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease is to include plenty of random movement and exercise throughout the day.

Walking around, using the stairs, taking frequent breaks during long drives or leaving your desk and moving around during your lunch break are simple ways to get active.

Research by the same team of authors published earlier this year also found that about six minutes of vigorous exercise or 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day can help reduce the risk of heart disease even in people who sit for more than 11 hours a day.
