Khalusha was arrested at 3 a.m. local time on Monday (July 15) in Soweto, east of the capital Nairobi, outside a club where he had gone to watch the Euro 2024 football final, according to Kenya's director of criminal investigations, Mohamed Amin.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to seducing, killing and disposing of the bodies of 42 women at the dump, all of whom were killed between 2022 and Thursday, July 11,” Amin said.

Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja added that “postmortem examinations are taking place today” on the nine bodies that have been found.

At a press conference on Sunday before the suspect was arrested, Kanja said the bodies were “severely dismembered, in various states of decomposition, and left in sacks.”

“We are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopath who has no respect for life,” Mr Amin said on Monday.

Khalusha led officers to his rented room, located about 100 meters from the crime scene. Police discovered a machete, 12 nylon bags, a pair of industrial rubber gloves, a hard drive and eight smartphones in the suspect's rented house.

According to the suspect's confession, his first victim was his wife, whom he “strangled to death before dismembering and disposing of the body at a landfill.”

“From interrogation, all his victims were killed in a similar manner,” Mr. Amin said.

Khalusha’s arrest came after police conducted forensic analysis of a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims, Josephine Mulongo Owino. Mobile money transfers made on the day she went missing helped point to the suspect.

The first six bodies were discovered on Friday by residents of Kware, in the Mukuru kwa Njenga neighbourhood of Nairobi. Kenyan police said the bodies were found in an abandoned quarry that was being used as a dumping ground.

Police said the suspect lived a short distance from the dump, raising questions about how he was able to avoid detection for the past two years. The area is also near a police station.
