Ukraine accused of attacking Russian territory with rockets

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, accused Ukraine on June 7 of attacking the town of Shebekino near the border with Ukraine with Grad systems. According to Gladkov, several rockets fell near a school and damaged buildings, but there were no casualties, Reuters reported.

On the same day, TASS news agency quoted Mr. Gladkov as saying that Ukrainian forces had fired more than 500 shells into Belgorod province in the past 24 hours.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on the allegations but has never publicly acknowledged being behind attacks inside Russia. The leadership of Belgorod province has repeatedly reported attacks in recent days.

The Grad (Hail) weapon system is a wheeled multiple launch rocket system used by both Russian and Ukrainian forces. Its use against civilian areas has been condemned by human rights activists.

Ukraine warns of floating mines and disease after dam collapse

A senior Ukrainian official has warned of the dangers posed by floating mines as well as the spread of disease and toxic chemicals from flooding as he inspected the damage following the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in the southern Kherson region.

Houses flooded up to the roof in Kherson on June 7 after the dam burst.

Visiting the city of Kherson in the province of the same name on June 7, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said more than 80 residential areas had been affected in the disaster that Ukraine and Russia blamed on each other, according to Reuters.

"The water is disturbing the mines that were laid earlier, causing them to explode," Mr Kubrakov told reporters, saying the consequences of the flooding were infectious diseases and chemicals entering the water.

Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said the water had reached a depth of 5.34 metres in some parts of the province, although he said the rise had slowed and could peak later on June 7.

What does the US say about the dam break?

The US says it is “uncertain” who was behind the Kherson dam collapse, but it would be unreasonable for Ukraine to do this to its own people and territory, as Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for the disaster.

The 15-member United Nations Security Council met on June 6 at the request of both Russia and Ukraine, after water overflowed the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River, a temporary front line separating the two conflicting sides in the southern Ukrainian Kherson region, according to Reuters.

Asked if Washington knew who caused the dam collapse, US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood told reporters ahead of the council meeting: "We are not at all certain, we hope to have more information in the coming days."

“But, I mean, come on… why would Ukraine do this to its own territory and its own people, flooding its own land, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes – it just doesn’t make sense,” Reuters quoted Mr. Wood as saying.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on June 7 called for an international investigation into the dam collapse, according to TASS news agency.

Ukraine says it is advancing in Bakhmut, Russia denies

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on June 7 that the country's forces had advanced from 200 to 1,100 meters in some areas of the front around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine in the past 24 hours.

"Our army has moved from a defensive to an offensive position in the direction of Bakhmut," she said on her Telegram channel, according to Reuters.

But the Russian Defense Ministry denied the information on the same day, saying that Ukrainian forces had failed in their attacks near Bakhmut, Reuters reported. Earlier, Russia's private military force Wagner had announced control of the city after months of fighting.
