Preventing degradation from xenophobic lifestyle

Tell me this story...

17 years ago, when I had just transferred from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh City, I was invited to visit his house by a colleague. At that time, his family was an ideal model for us. He and his wife had a stable social status, a stable economy, and both children studied at international schools. During the family meal, he and his wife advised us to send our children to international schools so that they could have a bright future. “They teach entirely in English, and the training program follows international standards.

Students entering the school gate are not allowed to speak Vietnamese. Any student who violates the rules will be immediately reminded and criticized by the teachers. Thanks to that, the children's English skills have developed very quickly. At home, my husband and I also encourage them to communicate in English. I learn from my children, so my English skills are among the best in the office" - he said, full of pride and honor!

When their two children grew up, they continued to be invested in studying abroad, then stayed abroad to work, settled down, and married Western women and men. Up to now, they have 4 grandchildren, both paternal and maternal. Recently, he became ill and had to be treated for a long time in the hospital. When we visited him, he sadly confided that it was only now that he realized and paid a heavy price for his foreign-oriented and anti-domestic way of thinking. Old age, weak health, and illness, he and his wife had to take care of each other.

Hiring a maid only helps a little. The children and grandchildren live abroad and only return home to visit their parents and grandparents once every few years. Each time they return, they stay in a hotel. Having been exposed to an English-speaking educational environment since childhood, the thinking and lifestyle of the children and grandchildren have become completely “internationalized”. They are unfamiliar with the family’s customs and traditions, and even though the four grandchildren are grown up, none of them can speak Vietnamese.

Grandparents sitting next to their grandchildren are like two strange worlds, from appearance to language barrier, cultural differences. The affection is blood-related, so it is difficult to bond intimately. The "rootlessness" of culture due to foreign worship and anti-indigenous culture comes very early and its consequences are smoldering, like "slow rain soaks in for a long time". By the time we realize it, it is too late, there is no chance to save it anymore. "What is the use of a lot of money? What is the use of successful children? Now I only wish to have peaceful, warm moments with my children and grandchildren, gathering in a family atmosphere. But that wish is now a luxury. Please take my family's story and write it, to help those who still have foreign worship and anti-indigenous culture to wake up soon. Please do not expose my brother and sister-in-law in the newspaper!" The tearful confession of a person at the age of "ancient and modern" makes us feel sad...

“Liberal” education and lessons from family, school to society

The story of foreign worship leading to the “loss of roots” of family traditions and ancestral traditions is not rare in today’s era. However, because it is an emotional factor, a large part of social life considers it a family matter. Sharing, if any, is only private. However, in the relationship between family-school-society, any deviation has a mutual impact.

At the 2021 National Cultural Conference, our Party emphasized and warned about the situation where a number of cadres, party members, and cultural workers have not paid due attention and taken active measures to preserve, protect, and promote the nation's fine and unique cultural values. Sometimes, imitating foreign countries in a ridiculous, offensive, and unselective way... These are also manifestations of a foreign-worshiping and xenophobic lifestyle. It originates from the family cradle, influenced by the educational environment (especially non-public education, educational cooperation with foreign elements).

By promoting things that are praised and exaggerated as "educational philosophies", such as: "Liberalism", "freedom", "unlimited"... many international educational units have absolutized the international factor, disregarded, neglected, and even ignored domestic educational criteria and content. For example, in the opening, summary, and closing ceremonies... many schools do not organize for teachers and students to sing the National Anthem; the celebration decorations do not have the National Flag or Uncle Ho's statue; instead, there are images and symbols of the so-called "liberalism", "freedom", "unlimited"... according to Western culture.

When our children are educated in their own homeland but reject the quintessence of traditional culture, the consequences for the future are very unpredictable. It not only causes parents to “lose” their children, families to lose their family traditions, but also the precious assets of the country, the cultural identity of the nation... are also faded. Thus, foreign worship and domestic hatred are also a form of degradation of moral qualities and lifestyle. If we do not wake up and let it “slowly soak in”, the risk of “self-evolution” and “self-transformation” is a short, even very short, step, which is harmful to the Party and the country.

Recently, a video clip of a young person claiming to be a Vietnamese student studying abroad in the US has been circulating on several social media platforms. In this video clip, the girl claims to have had her mind and vision "expanded" after studying and doing research abroad. In addition to endlessly praising the good and beautiful things in foreign lands, she also criticized Vietnamese people, disparaged Vietnamese culture, distorted the Party and State's policy of national reconciliation; denied the contributions of previous generations in the struggle for national liberation and national reunification...

What the girl said were all old distortions of hostile forces overseas. However, when uttered by a young person studying abroad, its nature was much different. Vague political awareness, weak will, easily wavering, leaning... are manifestations of degradation in a part of the young people. It comes from the foreign-worshiping, anti-internalism in education and self-education, from the family to the school and society...

How to prevent?

Wherever and in which environment the seeds of degradation are likely to appear, there must be forms and solutions to prevent and stop them right there. First of all, it must be affirmed that promoting educational cooperation, including the model of international schools, is inevitable in the integration trend. International education is not at fault. The fault lies in the limitations and inadequacies in management and operation methods.

The recent story of an international school providing students with pornographic reference materials that has caused a stir in public opinion and angered parents is an example. It shows the “blank spaces” and “gaps” in the management and supervision of competent authorities and the educational thinking of the board of directors, principals, and teaching staff of that educational unit. If we continue to take things lightly and be lax in management, supervision, and rectification, then a “mistake” will lead to a “cancer”. The seeds of degradation in the educational environment will sprout from “small things”, gradually accumulating into unpredictable consequences.

The 13th Party Congress document clearly defined the strategy for education and training development as: Focusing on education of qualities, creative capacity and core values, especially education of patriotism, national pride and self-respect, arousing the desire to develop, build and protect the Fatherland... Thus, whether it is public or non-public education, managers and educational units must have the responsibility and duty to imbue the motto and orientation of education.

In particular, the root of the problem is still from the family. At the 2021 National Cultural Conference, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, in his speech directing the conference, emphasized the requirement for cadres and party members to maintain "family traditions" and "countryside roots"! That is a rhetorical way to talk about the importance of preserving family traditions, traditions, and national cultural identity in educating and nurturing the next generation of revolutionaries. When a part of parents, especially those with economic conditions, still prefer foreign things and reject domestic things in guiding and educating their children, sad stories like the above are still common. The seeds of degradation also come from there...
