Many hotels today offer a variety of hourly, hourly, day and night rentals to meet the needs of their guests. However, there are many cases where guests are "confused" by the hotel's calculation method.
The following is a reader's share sent to Tuoi Tre Online .
From 6 to 21h, one and a half days
I have a relative from Ca Mau arriving in Ho Chi Minh City early in the morning and will take another bus to Nha Trang at 10pm the same day, so I'm looking for a hotel to have a place to rest from 6am to 9pm.
Found a satisfactory hotel in Phu Nhuan district, I thought that with that time frame the hotel would charge a price for one day, but when calculating the price it was 1.5 days and the staff's explanation was very confusing.
I looked at the price list posted at the hotel and saw all kinds of prices. In addition to the daily rental price (check-in at 2pm the day before, check-out at 12pm the next day), there are also hourly rental prices (one hour, two hours...), and overnight prices (applied from 10pm to 12pm the next day)...
After learning more, I found out that the hotel also has a rule: if you check in earlier than 2:00 p.m., each hour of early check-in will be charged an additional 50,000 VND/hour, and if you check in earlier than 7:00 a.m., the price will be charged for one night.
For check-out, if it is later than the regulation (12:00), each hour of late check-out will be charged 50,000 VND/hour and if it is longer than 16:00, an additional day's price will be charged.
Although I often rent hotels when traveling, looking at the price list and listening to the hotel staff's explanation really "confused" me.
Why not be flexible for those who miss the route because there are guests who do not stay overnight, if calculated by day and night it is too high, and if calculated by hour multiplied by the price, the price is not low either.
Three hours make a day
Recently, an acquaintance of mine from another province came to Ho Chi Minh City for urgent business so he booked a mid-range hotel to stay for one night. When he arrived it was around 11am, because the ride up was quite tiring so he wanted to check in, rest and then go to work early in the afternoon.
But the hotel said that according to their own regulations, check-in time is 2:00 p.m., and early check-in will be charged an additional night, and staying 3 more hours will be counted as one day.
So instead of booking one hour it suddenly became two nights.
Partly because he was quite tired, partly because he had already paid the deposit, not to mention the mentality of looking for another place, wasting time and worrying that other places would have the same rules, so the acquaintance had to let it go, pay the extra money to have time and a place to rest right away.
Regardless of budget hotels or those that rent rooms for 1 or 2 hours, hotels usually have a check-out time before 12:00 and check-in time after 14:00.
The gap in between is just enough for the staff to clean, sanitize, change items, and carefully check the room.
Not only in Vietnam but almost all other places in the world apply this rule. If the guest has a membership card, they can be allowed to check in earlier or check out one or two hours later without any extra charge.
Otherwise, there will be an additional charge for early check-in and late check-out. Some places charge a few hundred thousand dong, some charge 20% or 30% of a night, and some places charge "extra" for a whole night, as my acquaintance encountered.
In Japan, where I often travel for business, it's a bit different. Check-out time is usually 10am at the latest, and check-in time is after 3pm, or even after 4pm, with almost no exceptions, unless you're a "premium member" of the hotel.
Fortunately, hotels often keep luggage for guests who arrive before check-in time, so you can leave valuable items and heavy luggage at the hotel so you can go out, take care of business, and then return to the hotel to check in on time.
Recently, to increase competitiveness and perhaps also to meet some of the needs of guests, some hotels have launched accommodation packages in the form of 4 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours so that guests can freely choose the time that suits them.
According to this package, the stay is calculated from the time of check-in, guests can come and go at any time, as long as they stay at the booked time.
Book 24 hours in advance, check in at 9:15, check out at 9:15 the next morning, no haggling, if you want to stay longer, buy another package, just like buying a phone data package.
For those who travel frequently or work, it's better to take the time to learn, but for many people who travel less, after hearing about all these ways of calculating hours and hotel room prices, it's understandable that they suddenly have a "headache"!
