On August 14, Myanmar officials said at least two people were killed and more than 30 people were missing in a landslide that occurred at a jade mine in the northern state of Kachin a day earlier.

The mine collapsed near Ma Na village in Hpakant township of Kachin state, a police officer said. Rescuers have recovered two bodies and are continuing to search for the missing. Eight people were also injured in the accident.
Officials say it is difficult to determine how many are missing because most are illegal migrant workers. Deadly landslides are common in Kachin State, especially in the Hpakant mining region. Many locals make their living by searching for jade in the area. Most landslides are caused by the collapse of part of a waste dump.
In July 2020, a serious landslide occurred at a jade mining site in Hpakant town, killing 174 people and injuring 54 others.
