Accordingly, on the afternoon of April 6 (Hung King's Commemoration Day holiday), Children's Hospital 2 received a report from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center about a case of brain-dead organ donation at Military Hospital 175.

Immediately, the Liver Transplantation Council of Children's Hospital 2 consulted and found a suitable liver recipient. That girl was NTN (21 months old, living in Dak Nong province) with liver and biliary diseases, cirrhosis and hypothyroidism. As soon as the news was received, the family took the child to Ho Chi Minh City to perform the necessary tests.

On the afternoon of April 7, the liver removal team from Children's Hospital 2 arrived at Military Hospital 175, coordinating with experts from Military Central Hospital 108 to consult and proceed with the liver removal. The situation was continuously updated with the surgical team for the child patient at Children's Hospital 2.

With the support of the Traffic Police, at 8:00 p.m. the same day, the left liver weighing 240 grams was transported to Children's Hospital 2.

“We are very nervous and emotional, the shorter the travel time, the better for the surgery,” shared Dr. Tran Thanh Tri, Head of the Liver and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Transplantation Department.

The liver transplant went smoothly and ended at 2am on April 8. Up to now, the patient is being closely monitored, and his liver function has improved positively.

In addition, the family of the liver transplant patient is in very difficult circumstances. The Social Work Department of Children's Hospital 2 has mobilized benefactors to support this special surgery.

Doctors share about the first liver transplant from a brain-dead donor at Children's Hospital 2

The success of the first liver transplant from a brain-dead donor also marked a memorable milestone in 20 years of liver transplant implementation at Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City. Previously, all liver transplants here were from living donors.

According to Dr. Tran Thanh Tri, Children's Hospital 2 will promote liver transplants from brain-dead donors, expanding the chance of survival for children with end-stage liver disease. This has also been the dream of him and his colleagues for many years. Because liver transplantation is the only radical treatment for children with end-stage chronic liver disease.

To date, Children's Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City has performed 50 liver transplants, 34 kidney transplants, and 14 bone marrow transplants. In the 20 years of implementing pediatric organ transplants, organ sources have been the key issue causing organ transplants to be delayed and unable to meet actual needs. Many children without suitable organs for transplant have passed away.
