Ransomware, as the name suggests, is a type of malware designed to lock down access to a system or encrypt data, forcing the victim to pay a ransom to regain control. This type of attack is not only targeted at individuals but is increasingly common in corporate environments.
From January to December 2024, Kaspersky's enterprise security solutions detected and blocked a total of 135,274 ransomware attacks targeting organizations in Southeast Asia.
“In the first half of 2024 alone, Kaspersky recorded 57,000 ransomware attacks, which shows that cybercriminal groups have significantly increased their activity in the last six months of 2023. Given the increasingly sophisticated cyberattack tactics of ransomware groups, businesses in the region should be on high alert as cybercriminals are constantly scanning and exploiting vulnerabilities in complex technology systems and network infrastructures of businesses, thereby deploying dangerous campaigns,” said Adrian Hia, Managing Director of Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.
Businesses in Indonesia recorded the highest number of ransomware attacks in the region with 57,554 attacks, followed by Vietnam (29,282) and the Philippines (21,629). Notably, Malaysia saw a spike, with the number of ransomware attacks increasing by 153% year-on-year, from 4,982 in 2023 to 12,643 in 2024, according to statistics from Kaspersky.
To minimize the risk of ransomware attacks, individuals and businesses need to prioritize and implement the following cybersecurity measures: Equip your system with robust and optimally configured security solutions such as Kaspersky NEXT. Proactively track and detect threats through cybersecurity solutions such as Managed Detection and Response (MDR). Shut down unused ports and services to reduce the attack surface and limit vulnerabilities in the system. Organize comprehensive cybersecurity training courses for employees to raise awareness of online threats and equip them with the best cybersecurity defenses. Establish and maintain a process for regularly backing up important data, and periodically test the ability to recover…
