The US has made separate proposals to Baku and Yerevan regarding some of the most pressing issues in the Armenia-Azerbaijan tensions, said Derek Hogan, the first deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs.

Speaking before the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr. Hogan said: "The US Secretary of State hosted the two foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in early May to discuss some of the most controversial issues."

According to him, the issues Washington is addressing are the spacing of forces along the border, the dispute resolution mechanism in the treaty that the US is trying to facilitate, as well as the rights and security of Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh.

Last week, Mr. Hogan also spoke with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in an effort to find areas where progress could be made.

On June 1, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev are expected to meet in the capital Chisinau (Moldova) with the participation of European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The talks will "focus on what needs to be done to actually achieve that goal," Hogan said.

Earlier on May 22, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that his country would recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan as well as Nagorno-Karabakh on the condition that the security of the Armenian people was guaranteed.
