Can we have a summer without "extra classes and extra teaching"? - Photo: DUYEN PHAN
The article "Thinking about a summer without extra teaching or learning" ( Tuoi Tre Online , March 23) attracted the attention and enthusiastic comments from many readers.
No extra classes for children to have a complete summer
Reader Nguoi Dan suggested: "Authorities need to strictly handle illegal tutoring, not allowing tutoring to turn into many forms such as voluntary registration with parents' signatures, online group teaching."
Sharing the same view, reader with email toan****@gmail.com emphasized that summer should be a time for children to develop comprehensively: "Students need time to rest, gather with family, experience life skills, practice passions and talents. More importantly, the education sector must change the way it creates exams and tests so that students avoid rote learning and passive learning."
Reader Rose added: "We should give children back the opportunity to learn on their own, experience life skills and fairness between subjects, instead of just focusing on the main subjects."
"Localities need to increase inspections of extra teaching and learning. Otherwise, this will continue to happen widely" - reader nguy****@gmail.com expressed his opinion.
Meanwhile, reader Hien said: "In my opinion, we should ban extra tutoring and form the habit of self-study for students."
Reader Lan Anh commented: "It's not that there's no extra classes, now the centers are popping up like mushrooms. If you want a real summer vacation, the only way is to ban all extra classes both inside and outside of school."
"Because of too much extra study, our children are like factory chickens. Why are generations 9X, 8X, 7X still successful? Because of one thing: Achievement is not the top priority.
"There is little understanding of extra teaching and learning, but the competition for achievements is clear. Regulations on management of extra teaching and learning are aimed at making teachers more responsible in teaching" - reader Trung commented.
Sharing the same view, reader Weldy Bui believes that without going to extra classes, one can still study on one's own... If one is forced to go to extra classes, the mentality and motivation of self-study will be different, which will create different results. "Outstanding individuals do not come from coercion, but above all from self-study" - this reader emphasized.
"In the summer, high school students should spend more time gathering, traveling, and experiencing with family and friends. They can experience their passions, express their talents, and participate in community groups..." - a reader with the email address toan****@gmail.com wishes.
Is extra study still a "real need" of many families?
On the other hand, reader Long Le said: "I don't think so. Everything is the same as before Circular 29 was issued, it's just that extra classes have been moved to centers."
Recognizing that extra classes are a real need for many people, reader Ha Thu added her opinion: "If you don't review your culture in the three summer months, it's easy to forget. However, you should also choose the right extra class. My family still lets my child study English once a week in a small group."
According to reader Ha Thu: "The elders say that literature is knowledge, martial arts are practice. If you don't review culture during the three summer months, it's easy to forget. But sending your child to extra classes in large classes is useless. Whoever lets their child play, let them play, but my family still lets my child learn English once a week in small groups of a few students."
Expressing concern about not letting children take extra classes and having no one to supervise them at home, reader Meo shared: "Children will have more time to watch TV and use phones. Parents will have a harder time supervising their children."
"Children who don't go to extra classes stay home and sleep all day. Not all children make plans to draw, cook, or play in the summer. Some will be glued to their phones and TVs.
I still like going to summer school, just to prepare knowledge and mentality because there will be many more talented people making me overshadow. I like going to school, but maybe this school will be replaced by gifted classes, not knowledge preparation classes next year.
If someone says "not going to extra classes is great", being able to go back to my hometown, to travel. As for me, I don't have a hometown so I don't have to go back. I still want to go to school" - reader Bao Vy commented.
Reader Nhan stated the reality: "Extra classes have their pros and cons. It depends on the ability of the teacher and the student. But clearly not all parents are capable of tutoring their children, especially those in disadvantaged rural areas who lack qualified foreign language teachers.
Banning extra classes for primary school students, especially foreign languages, is a challenge for disadvantaged areas."
Thinking that each family's choice should be respected, reader Thang commented: "Each person has a different perspective on the issue of extra classes. Those who see the need should send their children to school, those who want their children to rest should let them play."
