A section of Nguyen Van Cu Street will be expanded.

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông01/11/2024

The existing extended Nguyen Van Cu Street still has a nearly 5.3km section that has not been expanded. And to complete this route, a new section of about 4km needs to be built…

"Nguyen Van Cu Street, an extension from Truong Tien Bridge (My Khanh) to Phong Dien Town (Phong Dien District, Can Tho City), currently has half of the road surface not yet expanded. Therefore, this section is quite narrow, while the traffic volume has been quite high since the opening of Vam Xang Bridge until now," said Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, residing in My Khanh Commune (Phong Dien District, Can Tho City).

At Truong Tien Bridge, Nguyen Van Cu Street is extended towards Ninh Kieu District with a road surface twice as wide as the section going back to Phong Dien town.

According to Mr. Dung, he goes to work in Phong Dien town every day, passing this route, so he really hopes it will be expanded, adding a few more lanes to make it as spacious as the section from My Khanh to Ninh Kieu district...

According to the Construction Investment Project Management Board (CPMB) of Can Tho City, the Nguyen Van Cu extended road project phase 1 (section from Cai Son - Hang Bang to My Khanh) invested by the Board has a length of 3,950m, passing through Ninh Kieu district and Phong Dien district.

The road has a right-of-way of 34m including: 12m sidewalk (6m on each side), 20m wide asphalt road surface (10m on each side), the rest is a 2m wide median strip. The total investment for phase 1 is about 171 billion VND, completed in 2010.

A unit of Nguyen Van Cu extended street has land reserved, but has not yet invested in expansion.

Nguyen Van Cu extended road phase 2 (My Khanh - Phong Dien - Tan Thoi section) passes through Phong Dien district with a length of 9,379m.

At the end of 2019, the extended Nguyen Van Cu road phase 2 opened to traffic from My Khanh (Truong Tien bridge) to Phong Dien, a 5,264m section. This road section has only one unit, with a 10m wide asphalt road surface (planned as two units, 20m wide), a 2m median strip and a 12m sidewalk (6m on each side). And this is the road section that Mr. Dung mentioned...

As for the My Khanh - Phong Dien section, according to the Department of Transport of Can Tho City, in the 2021-2025 period, the remaining unit of this extended Nguyen Van Cu road has been included in the investment portfolio, with a road surface width of 10m, sidewalks of 6m and 5 bridges.

This project aims to form an important urban traffic axis of the city; Implementing Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU of Can Tho City Party Committee on developing Phong Dien district into an ecological urban area. At the same time, exploiting land funds along both sides of the route creates revenue for the city.

However, due to some difficulties in funding, this 497 billion VND project has not been implemented yet.

The extended Nguyen Van Cu section has been invested in two units, quite wide.

"We are reviewing this project, and it is quite frustrating due to many voters' petitions.

Therefore, the Department will include the project to expand 10m of Nguyen Van Cu street from My Khanh to Phong Dien in the investment portfolio for the 2026-2030 period," said a leader of the Department of Transport of Can Tho City.

The extended Nguyen Van Cu road starts from the intersection of Nguyen Van Cu - Mau Than - Vo Van Kiet (Ninh Kieu district) and ends at provincial road 923 (Phong Dien district) with a length of about 17km (not including the long-existing Nguyen Van Cu road), connecting the central district of Ninh Kieu with Phong Dien district, relieving pressure on provincial road 923 (Vong Cung Road) which has existed for a long time).

And for Nguyen Van Cu Street extension to complete phase 2, there is still a section from Phong Dien town - Tan Thoi, which has been included in the project to expand provincial road 923 and will be under construction from 2021...

Currently, the project is still stuck with site clearance, so it is difficult to complete by the end of 2024 as planned.
