Specifically, the bill would ban app stores on devices that offer the TikTok app in the state. TikTok said in a statement that the bill “violates the First Amendment rights of Montanans by unlawfully banning TikTok.”

TikTok has previously denied concerns that it has ever shared data with the Chinese government and said the company would not do so if asked. Montana, which has a population of just over 1 million, said TikTok could face fines if it violates the ban, which takes effect on January 1, 2024.
TikTok is now facing growing calls from some US lawmakers to ban the app nationwide over national security concerns.
Governor Gianforte also banned the use of all social media applications that collect and provide personal information or data to foreign adversaries on government-issued devices.
India also banned TikTok in June 2020 due to privacy concerns. Pakistan banned TikTok in October 2020 and March 2021 due to complaints of "indecent" content.
