Admission to grade 10 high school by combined exam is not completely new and has been implemented in some localities such as Vinh Phuc, Nghe An, Hanoi...
For example, the 10th grade entrance exams in Vinh Phuc province included 5 subjects. Of these, 3 subjects were known in advance to candidates, including math, literature, and foreign language. The Department of Education and Training of the province did not announce the remaining 2 subjects until March of each year. For example, in the 2019-2020 school year, in the combined exam, students also took the subjects of physics and history.
This year, 9th grade students will take the 10th grade entrance exam according to new exam regulations.

In Nghe An province, the combined exam includes a foreign language and another subject. The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2020-2021 school year of the province is organized with 3 exams. Of which, 2 independent exams are math and literature and 1 combined exam includes foreign language knowledge and 1 subject selected from physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, civics... arranged into a complete exam, scored with a unified score. The combined exam is organized in the form of multiple choice with 50 questions, of which 33 are for foreign language and 17 are for the remaining subjects.
In Hanoi, in the 2019-2020 school year, candidates had to take four exams: math, literature, foreign language and history.
2025 is the first year of implementing junior high school and high school enrollment entirely according to the 2018 General Education Program. The goal of junior high school is defined by the 2019 Education Law: "Junior high school education aims to consolidate and develop the results of primary education; ensure that students have basic general education, the minimum necessary knowledge of techniques and career orientation to continue studying in high school or vocational education programs".
Based on the above objectives, the Draft Regulations on Secondary School and High School Admissions generally stipulate the implementation of 3 exam subjects, including math, literature and a third exam subject or a combined exam selected by the Department of Education and Training and higher education institutions with high schools and announced before March 31 every year.
However, if the combined exam is selected from among the subjects of secondary school, it can lead to a heavy load. For example, the foreign language - natural science combination requires students to take exams related to 4 fields. Therefore, the combined exam can be 2 to 3 subjects or sub-subjects. For example, the combination of foreign language, physics, civic education; the combination of foreign language, history, chemistry... and so on, foreign language can be taken every year, because foreign language is a compulsory subject in high school.
