An estimated 8,000 more people develop chronic kidney disease each year.

At the seminar, experts discussed the application of medical advances in the management of chronic kidney disease and early diagnosis and control of the disease, helping to prevent the consequences of this disease.

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive, long-term loss of kidney function. Symptoms of the disease progress slowly. In advanced stages, symptoms include: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, taste disturbances, nocturia, lethargy, fatigue, itching, mental decline, muscle twitching and cramps, fluid retention, malnutrition, peripheral neuropathy, and seizures.

The most common causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, and glomerulonephritis. Most patients with chronic kidney disease have co-morbidities and are at increased risk of serious complications, such as heart failure, kidney failure, and death. In the early stages, kidney failure is difficult to detect.

According to the Vietnam Dialysis Association, Vietnam has more than 10 million people with chronic kidney disease. The annual incidence of new cases of chronic kidney disease is about 8,000 people. The mortality rate from this disease ranks 8th among the 10 leading causes of death in Vietnam.

Surveys and statistics in 2022 show that the prevalence rate of people receiving renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis) is 430.1 people/1 million people (an estimated number of more than 43,000 patients receiving renal replacement therapy), including hemodialysis (82.5%), peritoneal dialysis (4.4%), and kidney transplantation (13.1%). The rate of new hemodialysis patients is 59.6 people/1 million people per year (equivalent to Vietnam having nearly 6,000 new patients each year). The mortality rate of hemodialysis patients is 25.6 patients/1 million people per year.

At the seminar, experts discussed the results of major clinical trials on the control of chronic kidney disease published worldwide. In particular, a global clinical trial examining the effects of new drugs showed a 39% reduction in the risk of disease progression and a 31% reduction in the risk of death in subjects with kidney failure. After 20 years, research in this field has provided new solutions in the management of chronic kidney disease from the early stages of the disease.
