On May 26, a Qatar Airways plane suddenly encountered turbulence while traveling from Doha to Ireland, an incident that injured 12 people.

According to the announcement of Dublin Airport (Ireland) authorities on May 26, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner of Qatar Airways encountered turbulence while flying through Turkish airspace, however the plane landed safely at Dublin airport as scheduled at 1:00 p.m. (local time - 7:00 p.m. Hanoi time).

Planes are assisted in landing in emergency situations by airport police, fire departments and local rescue teams.

According to reports, after the plane encountered turbulence in Turkish airspace, 12 people on board were injured, including 6 passengers and 6 crew members.

A passenger on the plane described the incident to local television, saying it lasted less than 20 seconds and happened while flight attendants were serving food and drinks.

Qatar Airways has confirmed that some passengers and crew suffered minor injuries during the flight and are receiving medical attention. Qatar Airways did not comment on the turbulence but said the matter was being investigated internally.

The incident occurred five days after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore was forced to land in Bangkok due to severe weather turbulence, killing a 73-year-old British man and leaving dozens of others in intensive care.

Turbulence-related aviation accidents are the most common type, according to a 2021 study by the National Transportation Safety Board. About 65,000 aircraft encounter moderate turbulence each year in the United States, and about 5,500 encounter severe turbulence. However, those numbers are likely to increase.

Paul Williams — a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading in the UK — told CNN in 2022 that he believes climate change is increasing the number of turbulence planes encounter.
